Lamar volleyball wins, secures No. 1 seed in Southland Conference tournament

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University volleyball team claimed a share of the Southland Conference championship Saturday with a 34-32, 30-17, 30-16 victory over Texas-San Antonio before 475 fans at McDonald Gym.

The Lady Cardinals end the regular season 24-8 overall and 15-1 in the SLC. Lamar shares the regular season title with Stephen F. Austin, which beat Texas State 3-0 on Saturday to also move to 15-1 in league play.

By virtue of its 3-2 win over SFA earlier this season, Lamar will be the No. 1 seed in next weekend's SLC Tournament in San Antonio.

The Lady Cardinals' last SLC title came in 2001. Lamar hasn't played in the NCAA Tournament since 1993. A berth in this year's NCAA Tournament will be on the line in San Antonio.

Molli Abel led the Lady Cardinal attack against UTSA, hitting .381 with 10 kills. Adrianna Meengs had 32 assists and six kills. Meagan Adams hit a team best .353, with seven kills and 11 digs.

The Roadrunners gave Lamar a scare in Game 1, hitting .259 to force the Lady Cardinals to hang on for a 34-32 victory. But the Lady Cardinals improved their defense in Games 2 and 3, forcing UTSA into a .026 hitting percentage in the final game.
