Abalde leads four Lady Cards in double digit scoring with 19 points

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team opened up the 2007-08 season with an 86-52 win over the LSU-Shreveport Lady Pilots, giving head coach Larry Tidwell his first victory as a division I head coach.

The Lady Cardinals wasted little time taking control of the game, pulling away form a 6-5 ballgame with an 18-6 run midway through the first half. Senior Aida Bakhos was the catalyst for the LU run to a 42-27 halftime lead, scoring seven points and grabbing nine rebounds with three assists.

In the second half the Lady Cardinals used a smothering defensive effort to burry the Lady Pilots, holding them scoreless for more than eight minutes, a span that stretched form 13:58 to play to the 5:38 mark in the second half. During the LSU-S drought, the Lady Cards went from an 11 point lead at 51-40, to a 35 point lead at 75-40.

For the game the Lady Cardinals had four players register double digit points, led by Tamara Abalde's double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Bakhos also registered a double-double, posting career-highs of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Brittney Williams and Nikki Williams each recorded 15 points and five rebounds for the Lady Cardinals, while Emily Spickler added eight points. Agnija Reke was also active on the offensive end of the floor, scoring seven points and passing out four assists. 

The Lady Pilots were led in scoring by Edie Leonards 12 points, while Whitney Hollins added nine points.

As a team, Lamar dominated the glass, out rebounding LSU-Shreveport 46 to 28. The turnover battle was also won by LU, as LSU-S had 25 giveaways to Lamar's 13.

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Monday night when they take on the Cowgirls of Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. in Stillwater, Okla.
