Nov. 12, 2007 Lamar Game Notes vs. LeTourneau BEAUMONT - After posting wins in both of its exhibition games, Lamar University is set to open its 57th season as a four-year institution Tuesday at 7 p.m. when LeTourneau University visits the Montagne Center in non-conference men's basketball action. Lamar is coming off an 89-76 win over Central Oklahoma on Saturday and previous defeated Incarnate Word, 92-75, in exhibition action. LeTourneau will also be playing its season opener. The Cardinals hit the road Friday for a 7 p.m. game at Mississippi. This will be the second meeting between Lamar and LeTourneau with the Cardinals holding a 1-0 all-time series advantage. Lamar defeated the YellowJackets 92-72 in Beaumont on Nov. 22, 2003. Junior Kenny Dawkins averaged 17.5 points per game in the two exhibition games to lead the Cardinals. He also averaged 5.0 rpg, 4.0 apg and 3.0 spg. He shot 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the field, 50 percent (3-of-6) from three-point range and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the free throw line. Senior Matthew Barrow averaged 15.5 ppg in the two exhibition games, including scoring a team-high 16 points in Saturday's win over UCO. He also averaged 5.5 rpg, and shot 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from 3-point range and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the free throw line. Senior Darren Hopkins averaged 12.5 ppg and 4.0 rpg and senior Currye Todd averaged 11.0 ppg. Senior Lamar Sanders averaged a team-high 7.5 rpg in two exhibition games. As a team in the two exhibition games, Lamar shot 45.3 percent from the field, 30.4 percent from 3-point range and 69.5 percent from the free throw line. The Cardinals outrebounded their opponents 44.5 to 36.0. LeTourneau returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's 15-10 squad. Juniors Dusty Evers and Dewones Smith both averaged 15.8 ppg to lead the YellowJackets. Evers also led the team with 6.4 rpg. He shot 45.2 percent from the field and 71.3 percent from the free throw line. Smith averaged 5.2 rpg, had 50 assists and 36 steals. He shot 46.6 percent from the field, 36.1 percent from 3-point range and 70.3 percent from the free throw line. Jayme Bradley averaged 11.1 ppg. He tied for second on the team with 39 steals and led the team with 67 three-pointers made. As a team, LeTourneau averaged 69.1 ppg and shot 42 percent from the field, 31.5 percent from 3-point range and 63.6 percent from the free throw line.
