Missouri sheriff says even under 'threat of arrest' he will not release gun owners' info to FBI

If there is an active criminal investigation I can see the requested information probably about a particular person. Just a general fishing expedition where they are searching everyone’s records in several counties, I can’t figure what lawful right they have or what federal law says that they can go into other law-enforcement records without consent.

Maybe there is such a law but I have never heard of it. I have had an FBI agent in my office wanting information on a particular suspect. I was more than happy to give them that information. I did not know I would be in trouble if the agent simply said, step out of the way because I feel like digging through your files.
