Bulldogs92
Coach Walkoviak told me once that the '80 team was his best one. There were several others that made deep runs in the early-mid 80s. Every Friday felt like a holiday, even when we played games that we knew would be blowout wins.

More teams in the playoffs does mean more money generated for the UIL becasue a portion of the playoff gate does go to the UIL......but lets also remember football money helps fund pretty much every other championship activity that the UIL puts on that doesnt make money..ie academic competitons, one-act play, smaller sports etc Mr. Buddy Garrity

I would not want to return to a "one team only" format. I think a happy medium is what we need. Two teams per district seems right.

I agree, four should not go out of a four team district. They could make it proportional. 2 could go out of a 4 or 5 team district, 3 go out of a 6-7 team district, and 4 go out of a 8-9 team district. In other words, 50% goes and 50% stays home. If you are not in the top half of your district you do not belong in the playoffs.
MrFleet23
I may be in the minority here but I like the current system. Last yr Chappell Hill was one play away from going to state after getting 3rd in District. Barbers Hill knocking off FBM and almost making it to the regional semi. More football has never been a bad thing IMHO especially when you can produce this type of drama and storylines. Separation Scientist
Thats right. No chance at all it goes back to anything but 4 teams per district. All coaches with average to slightly above average teams want to boast "Hey we made the playoffs xx times in a row!" That's exactly why an average of playoff WINS (not just appearances) per year is the best metric. Weak teams who lose in the 1st round are rightfully discounted. Only the number of playoff WINS count. I calculated 0.83 playoff wins per year for some random nameless team (I don't want to hurt sensitive feelings) in the other thread, for example. myrecordwashorrible
For those suggesting different number of teams make the playoffs based on the number in the district...how in the world do you set the playoff format? Some 1st place teams get byes and others don't? I realize it's more of a justified complaint about undeserving teams getting in, but there is no real way around it. The 4A issue with small districts simply can't be fixed. Not enough schools with enrollments in the range without "stealing" from 3A and 5A and thus causing problems for those classifications. Just threw the last 2 sentences in so people can rip the UIL some more.
Matthew328
I think the UIL kinda liked 3, but it made for uneven brackets with D1 finishing a week earlier......
oldschool2
I have no problem with 4 teams going. I have a problem with small districts. There are several circumstances of #4 seeds making runs in the playoffs. That alone justifies it. By the way.. record has nothing to do with it. Winning 8/9/10 isn’t always difficult with many of the trash rotten districts in this SeTx coverage area. Don’t be offended.. if there were more schools making it past area it wouldn’t be the case. myrecordwashorrible
I imagine most people don't like the small districts. However, there is nothing practical that can be done about it in some cases.

Separation Scientist
9-4A D2 is a really, really good district. 21-6A is awesomely good, maybe the best in the state 8-5A DI is average, top heavy and bottom weak. Crosby will go FAR (PAM needs to live up to potential) 9-5A DII is a bit above average 9-3A DI is good 10-4A DI is growing 12-3A DII Newton is the lone power, very well could win State. 10-3A DI is trash. One of the weakest in the state (its the midget district) Mr. Buddy Garrity and Dirty_but_Dazzling 1

BADSANTA
3 was best IMO but I csn see 4 now due to revenue and the amount of schools there are in the state.

If even a single #4 seed beats a #1 seed then it’s justified.. and it happens every year in every sport. Realistically, the 4 shouldn’t beat a 1 unless the 4 is in a good district or the 1 is in a trash one.
