LamarJunior Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Lamar ready for second straight Big XII foe Nov. 14, 2007 Complete Release in PDF Format AUSTIN, Texas - The Lamar University women's basketball team continues their three game road swing Thursday night, taking on the No. 22 University of Texas at the Erwin Center at 7 p.m. The Lady Cardinals enter Thursday's game with a 1-1 record, on the heels of a 91-54 loss at Oklahoma State on Monday night. In their season opener on Saturday, Lamar posted an 86-52 win over LSU-Shreveport. Through the first two games of the season the Lady Cards are being led by sophomore Brittney Williams and freshman Tamara Abalde who are each averaging 13.5 points per game. Abalde has also been active on the boards, averaging nine rebounds per game. Junior Nikki Williams has been solid for the Lady Cardinals, averaging 13 points per game while picking up five steals on the year. Senior Aida Bakhos, who has turned in double digit rebound efforts in both games this year, leads the way for Lamar on the glass with 10.5 rebounds per game, while averaging 7.5 points per game. Junior Agnija Reke leads the way for the LU offense with eight assists, while Jasmine Stewart has five steals on the year. Texas enters the game with a 1-0 record after running past Missouri State 92-55 in head coach Gail Goestenkors UT coaching debut. All five Longhorn starters finished with double digits in the scoring column against the Lady Bears, led by Brittainey Raven's 22 points and four steals. Carla Cortijo also had a big night for the Horns, scoring 17 points and passing out seven assists. The Lady Cards and Texas have met on nine previous occasions, with the Longhorns holding a 6-3 advantage in the win column. The last time the two teams met was in the 2001-02 season, an 80-47 win for UT. After Thursday's game the Lady Cardinals will close out their three-game road stretch with a Saturday afternoon showdown against Texas Southern in Houston. Lamar will face the Lady Tigers at 5:30 at the H&PE Arena.
