Oh, brother! another Harrington headed to Lamar baseball

The saying goes like father like son. That saying is not exactly what Port Neches-Groves has experienced for most of this decade. In recent years, the formula down on the Reservation has been closer to: like older brother, like younger brother.

First comes the older, left-handed brother, then just a few years later, the younger, right-handed brother comes through, excels as an Indian ball player, heads on to a great career with Lamar baseball and then gets drafted as a San Diego Padre.

First the Stutes family did it with Kyle and Jason. Kyle, a left-handed pitcher, graduated from PN-G in 2000, became an All-American pitcher at Lamar and got drafted by the Padres in 2004.

In 2005, his younger, right-handed brother toed the rubber for the Cardinals as a true freshman.

At a press conference in the Competition Gym at the Reservation on Wednesday, the Harrington family watched its youngest son, Eric, make his college allegience to Lamar official, following the footsteps of his older brother, Allen, who was drafted in the 13th round by the Padres earlier this year.

Allen played three years with Lamar after becoming an All-State pitcher at PN-G in 2004. In 2007, Allen posted a 9-4 record with a 3.72 ERA while striking out 103 batters.

After signing on the dotted line with the Cardinals, it's now Eric's turn to make a name for himself with Lamar.

"We're a family here," said Lamar head coach Jim Gilligan. "We had the pleasure of having his brother (Allen) come through here — he had a great career for us.

"Now Eric has that same opportunity, to come here, make a name for himself and hopefully get to the next level. We are fortunate that Allen was here and that he has a younger brother.

“They have a great family and Allen took home the things we taught him and gave some of that knowledge to Eric. Now Eric's coming here."

Eric still has half his senior left as an Indian and he hopes PN-G will be a contender this year.

As a junior, Harrington batted .340, had an on-base percentage of .475 and pitched his way to a 10-2 record with a 2.52 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 71.3 innings pitched.

"He is just carrying on family tradition," said PN-G head coach Jay Stone. "He's followed the same footsteps as his brother and he has certainly earned it. He works hard and definitely puts his time in.

“He has great dedication and it's evident that it's paying off. I expect Eric to have a tremendous senior year and go on to Lamar and have a great career there."

Eric said being able to follow in his big brother’s shoes has been an "amazing experience."
