Guest abovetherim Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 NATCHITOCHES — Visiting New Orleans got 19 points and 8 rebounds by Kendall Dykes Wednesday night and the Privateers closed the game with a 14-5 run over the final 5:17 to notch a comeback 72-66 win at Northwestern State in a non-conference college basketball game. UNO won its season opener and debut under 30-year-old head coach Joe Pasternack. Northwestern, which entered the game 38-5 at home over the past three seasons, lost its homecourt debut and dipped to 0-4 after three weekend losses in a tournament hosted by No. 21 Stanford. The Demons will shoot for their first win at home Friday night against University of the Ozarks, continuing a four-game homestand. The Privateers shot 54 percent (28-52) from the floor and sank 14 of 18 free throws (78 percent) while the Demons managed just 37.5 percent shooting aim from the field and missed 9 of 19 free throws (53 percent). Bo McCalebb, the nation’s second leading returning scorer with a 25-point average a year ago, had 16 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals for UNO. His steal of an inbounds pass and layup with 3:18 left gave UNO its first lead down the stretch, 64-63, and launched a game-ending 10-3 burst by the visitors.The Privateers’ Ben Elias added 14 points, sinking all six of his shots from the field and both of his free throw tries. Northwestern got 16 points form Keithan Hancock, who made 4 of his 9 tries on 3-pointers. The rest of the Demons combined to go 4 for 19 behind the arc. Gerell Thomas had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for NSU. UNO led by 9 in the first half, by 34-29 at halftime and held a 52-45 advantage with 12:58 remaining. Northwestern went on a 13-2 spurt over the next five minutes to move on top 58-54 with 7:52 left, and led 61-56 with 6:39 to go. But the Demons made only 1 of their last 10 shots from the field from that point. A five-point advantage with 4:28 left evaporated over the next 70 seconds.
