New Scoreboard System Debut Tonight—Your help needed!

Hello everyone..

We have put into place a better way for us to keep scores! Every Friday Night (or Thursday/Saturday) individual game threads are posted which give us a space to discuss the ongoing games and to post game and score updates.

We now have a way for you to update the score on the title of the topic and on the scoreboard itself...

See Scoreboard Here

When you post a score update in the game thread--please post the score using this format (command)

For a Game that's still in progress:

!!score:visitor score/home score/quarter/minutes/seconds

So Let's say Alvin (visiting team) was Trailing Beaumont United (home team) 24 to 7  with 6:32 left in the 3rd Quarter

You would post

!!score:7/24/3/6/32    and that's going to update the scoreboard

For a Game that's gone final:
 !!final:visitor score/home score

Let's say Alvin (visiting team) was lost to Beaumont United (home team) 24 to 7

You would post

 !!final:7/24

This is a work in progress and we will be continuing to make this better in an effort to better serve you--the fans of sports in Southeast Texas!

I think it’ll be beneficial for people making updates to make two posts: the first with a regular update, and the second using the format provided.  This serves two purposes: 1. If it doesn’t work, we still get the update.  2. If it doesn’t work or is incorrect, admins can edit and fix it.

I agree.

Give the score in a normal way and also in the algorithm way.

Had a few very confused and have spoken out against it.

Yes.  And several threads where scores were only posted in the new format, and didn’t work in the title.  So I had no idea what the actual result was.

I think this fix will address the issue of readability

It’s terrible.

If regular updates are posted as well as algorithm updates it will be great.  The motive behind this is to allow users to open up the football forum and literally be able to score down and see live scores in the title of the thread.  That will be awesome.  But clearly the site has some kinks to work out.

Folks starting to see just how much Grad did here on Friday nights.

You guys want to volunteer your time to update every thread and the scoreboard every Friday night, I imagine Jordan will be most welcome to the help.

The new system has a few kinks to work out but this is a much better way.

It’s the members attending the games that keep the majority of the site updated. To type

Works pretty well… Simple.

And those members for the most part continued to type those updates.   You want to spend three or four hours on here on friday nights updating and monitoring these simple posts that work pretty well?  Or how about you go to the game you're interested in and update the score live for us? Because there are several folks who spend a good part of their friday evenings monitoring content, updating scores, changing titles to reflect finals, changing the big scoreboard, etc. etc. so that folks like yourself can log in, look at the one score you want to know about, make two posts criticizing the site, and then log out for a couple of days before you come back and do it again.  This new system will take a little time to work out, but once it's up and running it will greatly reduce the manual work needed on the site, the vast majority of which is unpaid and done by folks volunteering their time to keep the site up and running.

There are two different methods we are speaking to.
The method to which you refer is great for updating only the thread where someone has to click into it to see the score and if there's been a discussion, the score itself can get pushed to a different set of pages than what's currently being displayed.

The new method is to be able to crowd source the work to systemically update the thread title, a centralized scoreboard, and also a database. We're trying to enhance the user experience for folks to see scores and get updates.
As part of the feedback we're seeing, we've also put a system in place that can take the !!score: version and put it into a readable format within the same post, which should address one of the major flaws.

You're encouraged to participate in either method but when just a few people outside the mods start inputting scores in the new fashion, the whole forum will see a huge benefit.

Fixes implemented this week:

  • !!: and !!score: are the same command and achieve the same outcome
  • minutes/seconds are no longer needed and won't be posted to the game thread title nor the aggregated scoreboard
  • Minutes/seconds, if posted, will be added to the post
  • h or H can be used as halftime, f or F can be used to indicate final in place of the quarter
  • !!:28/10/f and !!final:28/10 are the same command now
