CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas women's basketball program took its first step in bolstering the roster for next season on Wednesday, as the Sugar Bears announced the signing of Aly Sherman from Mt. Vernon, Texas.

"We're extremely excited that Aly is going to be a Sugar Bear," UCA head coach Checola Seals-Horton said. "We feel like she'll be a great addition to this team. She can do so many things – she's a scorer, a great defender, and an all-around athlete."

Sherman, a 5-foot-9 combo guard, averaged 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists per game as a junior and was named the defensive player of the year in her region. A member of the 1,000-point club at Mt. Vernon, Sherman was also a standout volleyball player and set a Texas state record in the triple jump.

"We saw Aly play several times last year, and were impressed by her athletic ability and ability to play defense," Seals-Horton said. "She's a very talented young lady and should compete for playing time immediately."

This is the second straight year the Sugar Bears have secured talent from coach Brad Floyd's program at Mt. Vernon, with Lady Tiger alum Jamye Adair in her first season at UCA.

"Aly comes from a great high school program where she's been able to fine-tune her skills," Seals-Horton said. "With the loss of Jamye, she'll be counted on tremendously for them this season. Coach Floyd does a great job with his team, and that's good for us because it means Aly comes in a step ahead."
