Nov. 14, 2007

SAN MARCOS - Texas State Head Volleyball Coach Karen Chisum announced the signing of three players to national letters of intent for the 2008 Texas State volleyball season.

Becky Belt, Amber Calhoun and Whitney Rhoden will put on the maroon and gold for the 2008 Texas State volleyball season.

"They will bring a lot of enthusiasm, competitiveness and talent to the `08 Bobcats," said Chisum. "They're great students and the kind of individuals I want in this program."

Belt, a 6-2 outside hitter, has lettered for all four years at Clements High School, including being named to the All-District First Team three years. She was recently honored as the 2007 Offensive Player of the Year for District 23-5A after totaling 515 kills, 260 digs and 55 blocks in 104 regular season games. Belt also led the greater Houston area in kills in 2007 while ranking second in the area in kills in 2006.

Calhoun has lettered the past three years for Second Baptist High School as a middle blocker, leading Second Baptist to a 25-9 regular season record in TAPPS/5A play. A 2007 captain, Calhoun was named All-State as well as First-Team All-District each of the last two years. Second Baptist advanced to the state semifinals this season after advancing the same distance in the state tournament in 2006.

Rhoden helped lead Friendswood High School to similar success, as Friendswood advanced to the state semifinals this season for the second straight year. An outside hitter, Rhoden has twice been named First-Team All-District for the Lady Mustangs. She also earned All-Galveston County honors in 2006 and was named Offensive Player of the Tournament at the Northwestern Tournament this season.

All three signees are also well acquainted with each other after playing on the same club volleyball team, the Houston Juniors. The trio will also get the opportunity to play inside Strahan Coliseum this weekend, as each player's high school has advanced to the State Championships that are hosted annually by Texas State.

Head Coach Karen Chisum on each signee:

"Becky will add tremendous height and talent in the outside hitting position. She has a personality on the court that will help us in the future and is a full rotation player who loves to play."

"Amber's upsize is her athletic ability. She has the speed and jumping ability to become an all-conference middle blocker for us in the future. She is also a highly academic young lady and is the epitome of a `student-athlete.'"

"Whitney is a very dominating outside hitter who has experience great success with her high school team and is a main key to that team. She'll provide leadership as well as excellent all around skills to the Bobcats."

"All three played on the same club team last year so they know each other very well. This group is very compatible and loves each other!"
