Eight seasons of eight wins and not making the playoffs...gotta think a few playoff wins woulda happened in those years

I think tip your hat to the old timers, but during these days, guys are competing against a lot more schools and quiet frankly a lot better competition.

That's true but you also have to balance that take with only one team made the playoffs until 1980....so there's a trade off that when looking at it neutrally has to be accounted for.....

My bad, mis-read the Houston Chronicle article from 2019. Kay was asst. at North Shore for 4 of Joseph's wins prior to 2014 over N.S. head coach David Aymond.

We Dawg fans believe we have the best high school football coach in Texas. 
8 state championships. 
More state championships than playoff losses. 
SLC was a great program when got there and so was Westlake. 
No doubt he is one of the best but the best, I disagree. 
Aledo, Celina, Katy, all can claim great coaches with many state championships.

Agree, you also have to take into consideration that schools in PVIL couldn’t participate in UIL until early 80’s. I may be wrong on date. That’s a lot of good athletes not participating all of those years.

PVIL Merger with the UIL

The PVIL schools in the larger cities played their last football season in the PVIL in 1966. The last basketball, baseball and track seasons for the larger schools was 1967. The smaller schools continued to play for a state championship in baseball through the spring of 1968. The smaller schools continued to compete in the state track meet at Prairie View through the spring of 1969 and they also continued to play for a state championship in football through the fall of 1969. The state basketball tournament continued to be held at Prairie View for the smaller schools through the spring of 1970. By the fall of 1970, the PVIL had ceased operations. In 2005, the records of the PVIL were included with UIL records.

I knew I was off on years, I just remembered in Beaumont when we merged with Hebert. Anyone know the most state championships since 1970?

Mike Johnston won there at Katy early on. 97, 2000 and 2003 titles.

Great article & reminds me why you have to take into consideration level of competition when you’re throwing around the goat title…there’s a HUGE difference in competition level between 6A D1 & 6A D2…with that said all state champions aren’t created equal.

I guess there could be an argument that North Shore enrollment assists them winning so many championships since the have double the amount of students to pick from. Not taking anything from North Shore, but bringing it up for argument sake.

And they compete against other schools in the D1 bracket that all have similar enrollments hence why the D1 bracket is more competitive.

I’d have to look at enrollment figures, but I think NS has Atleast 1,000 more students then most schools they play. That’s a lot of athletes to pick from more then other schools. Also, is NS an open enrollment school district?
