Nov. 15, 2007 Lamar Game Notes at Mississippi OXFORD, Miss. - After opening the season with a 103-64 rout of LeTourneau, Lamar University will step up the competition level dramatically as the Cardinals face Mississippi Friday at 7 p.m. in non-conference men's basketball action at Tad Smith Coliseum. Lamar is off to a 1-0 start following Tuesday's win over LeTourneau, which improved its record to 41-16 all-time in season openers, including a 29-3 mark at home. Ole Miss is 2-0 after posting an 81-78 win over South Alabama Tuesday. The Cardinals return home to play Wyoming Monday at 7 p.m. This will be the third meeting between the Cardinals and Rebels and the series is tied at 1-1. Ole Miss won the first meeting, 98-70, on Dec. 4, 1991 in Oxford and Lamar won, 86-81, on Dec. 9, 1995 in Beaumont. The bench provided plenty of offensive punch for Lamar in its season opening win. Senior Currye Todd led the charge with a game-high 17 points off the bench on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. Junior Justin Nabors added a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. He was 6-of-10 from the field. Junior Lawrence Nwevo chipped in eight points and seven rebounds. There were four starters that also scored in double-figures led by senior Darren Hopkins' 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range. Senior Matthew Barrow and junior Jay Brown each added 12 points and senior Lamar Sanders nearly recorded a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds, and had a career-high five steals. As a team, Lamar is shooting 48.1 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from 3-point range and 86.4 percent from the free throw line. The Cardinals are outrebounding their opponents by a 29.0 margin (58.0-29.0). Eniel Polynice leads Ole Miss in scoring at 18.5 ppg and is averaging 5.5 rpg. He is shooting 63.6% from the field, 57.1% (8-14) from 3-point range and 20.0% (1-5) from the free throw line. He is second on the team with seven assists and is tied for the team lead with four steals. Trevor Gaskins is second on the team in scoring at 14.5 ppg. He is shooting 56.3% from the field and 64.3% (9-14) from 3-point range. Kenny Williams leads the team in rebounding at 7.5 rpg. Chris Warren is averaging 11.0 ppg and leads the team with 10 assists (5.0 apg). As a team, Ole Miss is averaging 89.0 ppg and is shooting 55.5% from the field, 48.1% from 3-point range and 63.6% from the free throw line. Guest mffl Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 The Conference had some big wins this week vs. Texas Tech, ORU, and almosttt LSU, Lets add to this great week!Oh and by the way, i heard the Rebels played verrrry sloppy against an average South Alabama, sure Ronnie Arrow is their coach, but they have lost some talent.
