CardinalBacker
We always just used our own health insurance when ours got hurt. Didn’t realize that there was a school option.
Hagar
Most of the time it seems Insurance Companies do their best to not pay absolutely positively anymore than they can get away with. Kudos @raideroldtimer for posting the information. Red Boyou and Dat Brook

I may be wrong on this, but the school insurance options aren't always the best and I believe there are quite a few qualification issues and/or cost based on household income. If someone with direct knowledge could give more detail or correct me it would be nice.
LocalAT
A lot of it has to do with the primary insurance (the parents), like if they need to see a specialist but their insurance requires a referral from their primary then they have an extra step in the process or sometimes they can only be seen by certain providers. The schools insurance will sometimes cover the rest of the bill or sometimes just a percentage, depending on what is needed and what kind of coverage the school pays for. Normally for imaging, and Xray will be covered 100% but an MRI or CT scan may cover 50%-75% of whatever is left. As far as surgeries, I've seen anywhere from $500 to $4,000 paid by the schools insurance. Anything with insurance is always hard to be exact. A lot of times it's the primary insurance that causes the biggest hurdle for kids to get the care they need. They have to do what their primary requires and then the schools will cover as much as possible, but it's not always 100%.
WOSdrummer99
That sounds horrible. We need to push our state legislators to protect our student athletes. Full coverage under the UIL should be the norm. Not just for the gridiron, but all sports for all genders. Dade Phelan should be getting some calls about this. School insurance covers all sports regardless of gender, including band, dance, and cheer. I think it technically even covers PE and overall all at school incidents. It's mostly just parents not knowing or school employees being unaware and not letting parents know.
CardinalBacker
One of our kids got hurt at an STJFL game... not even a player, just had to go get some stitches at the ER. The league offered us their insurance information and I was confused. Sometimes you just need to stand on your own two feet, honestly. Thats why i was surprised how a school couldnt take care of them. They are sacrificing there body for a game that most of them wont play college ball. How much does a school make on ticket fee’s? A little league imo is different I dont pay tax money to a little league but i do pay tax money to a school district that should take care of their athletes. Raider24
I asked every which way. In the late 80’s, early 90’s, I had 1 shoulder & 1 knee surgery. My parents paid nothing and wasn’t asked. BISD took care of it all. 2015 my oldest has knee surgery. Get forms from school. My insurance is primary. School is secondary. I didn’t pay a dime. Even covered my co-pay. 2016 shoulder surgery. Same. 2020, my youngest has knee surgery. Same as oldest. Then my oldest tore his Liz franc and needed foot surgery playing college ball. We paid nothing. university took care of it all and never asked for anything from us. I guess difference between HS and College ball now. My question is how does it work for the kids who don’t have insurance in HS?

When our tax payer dollars are at stake and the legislators are involved, everything is political. By your screen name, I know you and I vote the same party. Promise you, if this hit the floor of our state government it will get nasty. I will simply leave it at that. I'm not disagreeing with you all about taking care of this young man or any student athlete, but politicians will find a way to make this a problem. Insurance and our government. Think we won't have corruption. Think again.

Wether the parents have insurance or not should be irrelevant. I don’t know how that becomes a corruptible issue, it’s a pretty cut and dry issue. Better yet, why not have athletes provide proof of insurance before allowing them to play? Why should the public have to pay for you to participate? Clueless
At the college level, the college insurance pays. I had one that had Tommy John surgery a couple of years ago college footed the bill.

We’re talking about student athletes that aren’t getting paid to perform and represent their schools. They put in hours of work to perfect their skill in whatever sport their in an are getting coached by paid coaches. We’re talking about covering their expenses in case of a injury while performing or practicing on school property not covering injury expenses of a illegal alien. Good Grief! myrecordwashorrible
Tell me again this won't get political. I guarantee you there are anti-athletic factions embedded throughout education that will be adamantly opposed. Again, I'm not stating whether it should or should not be covered. I just know people and truly know educators. As for my corruption statement...some insurance group will look to completely control this if it were ever to occur...then some politician will be linked to massive kick backs. My intent is not upset or be disagreeable. Just things to think about it. Also, if this is so simple of an issue, why has it not been instituted? It has liklely been examined by our government officials before now.

As a taxpayer and homeowner I have no problem with the school district taking care of our student athletes when they are injured while practicing or performing for the school district. If the parents have insurance to take care of it then great, if they don’t then the school insurance should step in to take care it. As a whole when you look at whole school year with all the sports that are played there is a small percentage of kids that will need to be taken care of, so just do the right thing an take care of them. Believe me, from the city government all the way to the federal government they all waste plenty enough of the taxpayers money that could cover kids that need covered when they get injured.
