Longhorns Hand Lamar 94-35 Loss

Lady Cardinals finish road swing Saturday at Texas Southern

AUSTIN, Texas - The Lamar University women's basketball team could not slow down the up tempo pace of the University of the University of Texas Thursday night, falling 94-35 at the Irwin Center.

The Lady Cardinals struggled offensively from the beginning of the game, as the Longhorns raced out to a 30-7 lead 13 minutes into the game. Texas went into halftime with a 51-15 lead, as Lamar shot just 17.1 percent in the first half while the Horns shot 63.6 percent from the field.

In the second half the Lady Cardinals picked up their offensive production, shooting 30 percent from the field. A rejuvenated defensive effort to go along with a more consistent offense over the final 20 minutes was not enough for Lamar though as the Longhorns outscored LU 43-20.

For the game the Lady Cardinals were led in scoring by Brittney Williams who scored 12 points, while Nikki Williams added 10 points. Only three other players scored for Lamar in the ballgame, as Tamara Abalde scored eight, Emily Spickler scored three and Agnija Reke scored two.

The Longhorns had five players finish in double digit scoring, led by Kathleen Nash who had game-highs with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Rachel Rentschler, Aubrey Cook and Ernisha Bailey each tallied 13 points and Brittainey Raven scored 12.

The 59 point loss is the fifth worst loss in Lady Cardinals history and the largest margin of defeat since Lamar's 66 point loss at Western Kentucky on March 5, 1998.

The Lady Cards will close out their three-game road stretch with a Saturday afternoon showdown against Texas Southern in Houston. Lamar will face the Lady Tigers at 5:30 at the H&PE Arena.
