AT&T Stadium in Arlington hosts 12 University Interscholastic League state football championships Wednesday-Saturday, featuring some of the top talent in Texas.

Here are 10 of the most intriguing players taking the field for championship week.

Shea Adams, Jr., WR, Port Neches-Groves

Also listed as a quarterback, the versatile Adams leads the Indians with 28 touchdowns, including 23 rushing along with 802 yards. Adams has 35 receptions for 429 yards and five touchdowns, in addition to a touchdown pass.

David Amador, Sr., WR, North Shore

Miles Coleman, Jr., WR, Austin Vandegrift

Coleman had a major impact against previously-unbeaten Katy in the state semifinals, catching seven passes for 184 yards and a touchdown while throwing for two other touchdowns. Coleman ranks among the state leaders with 94 receptions for 1,604 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Johntay Cook II, Sr., WR, DeSoto

The Eagles boast one of the state's top receivers in Cook, a four-star recruit committed to the University of Texas. Cook leads DeSoto with 81 catches for 1,366 yards and 21 touchdowns

Austin Cumpton, Sr., RB/LB, Hawley

Few players have contributed more to their team this season than Cumpton, who has rushed for 2,021 yards and 40 touchdowns on 284 carries while ranking second on his team with 111 tackles, 16 for loss, and adding four interceptions.

Caden Durham, Jr., RB, Duncanville

UIL State Football Championships: What to Watch

Alvaro Montaño, Staff writer

Dec. 13, 2022: Dec. 13, 2022 4:02 p.m.

North Shore and Duncanville will take center stage at the UIL football state championships Saturday night in the Class 6A Division I title game. Twelve programs will be named state champions by the end of the week, and there are plenty of other intriguing issues to follow as games begin Wednesday morning at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Here are five:

Six teams chasing first titles

Four programs across Class 2A-6A will be looking for their first championship in Arlington. Poth and Hawley have been there before, but Vandegrift and Boerne will experience the big game for the first time.

Vandegrift (14-1) will face DeSoto (13-2) in the Class 6A Division II championship at 3 p.m. Saturday. Vandegrift used its passing game (453 yards) to advance past Katy in the semifinals 38-35. DeSoto, which won its only title in 2016, used its running game to advance past Denton Guyer 47-28 by rushing for 434 yards.

Undefeated Boerne (15-0) will face China Spring (14-1) in the Class 4A Division I championship at 3 p.m. Friday. China Spring hopes to repeat as state champs while Boerne clinched its first appearance by shutting out Tyler Chapel Hill 35-0, its second shutout of the playoffs.

Poth (14-1) will face unbeaten Gunter (14-0) in the Class 3A Division II championship at 3 p.m. Thursday. Gunter advanced to the title game for the fifth time in seven years, while Poth returns for the first time since 1968.

Unbeaten Hawley (15-0) will face Refugio (14-1) in the Class 2A Division I championship at 11 a.m. Thursday. Refugio is looking to win its third title in seven years while Hawley is making its second consecutive appearance.

A pair of six-man teams are also looking for their first titles as Benjamin meets Loraine in a rematch of the regular season. Benjamin won 61-30 the first time around in late September. Benjamins (13-0) will face Loraine (13-1) in the Class 1A Division II championship at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Aledo vs. College Station face off in rematch

Five years ago, College Station won the Class 5A Division II title, its first in program history, while denying Aledo its eighth title. Fast forward, College Station is chasing its second championship under first-year coach Stoney Pryor and Aledo is looking for its fourth title in five seasons under coach Tim Buchanan after capturing three straight from 2018-20.Aledo (13-2) will face College Station (13-2) in the Class 5A Division I championship at 11 a.m. Saturday.

College Station only had five years of varsity experience under its belt entering the 2017 season and finished 14-2 overall after upsetting Aledo 20-19. The teams haven’t met since then.

Aledo has the most titles of all state championship participants with 10 and beat previously unbeaten Longview 17-14 to reach the title game for the 12th time in program history. Aledo has won 13 consecutive games since starting the season 0-2.

College Station is coming off a win over Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial 33-7 and hopes to take down Aledo at AT&T Stadium for only the second time in 16 games.

South Oak Cliff going for back-to-back titles

South Oak Cliff is headed to its second championship game in as many years. Last year, South Oak Cliff won its first title in program history while becoming the first Dallas ISD team since 1958 to win it all.

This time, the Golden Bears won 12 consecutive games, after starting 0-3 in non-district, to reach the title game for the second time in program history under coach Jason Todd. To repeat, the Golden Bears will need to take down a Port Neches-Groves squad that’s riding an 11-game win streak under coach Jeff Joseph. South Oak Cliff (12-3) will face Port Neches-Groves (13-2) in the Class 5A Division II championship at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Indians advanced to the title game for the since time since 1999 and are looking for their first championship since 1975. South Oak Cliff is coming off a win over previously unbeaten Argyle 14-6, while Port Neches-Groves beat Liberty Hill 42-14. Both offenses are averaging about the same points per game at 34.8 for Port Neches-Groves and 33.3 for South Oak Cliff, but the Golden Bears’ defense has fared better at 14.4 points allowed per game to the Indians’ 19.3.

Carthage vs. Wimberley meet in battle of unbeatens

The lone matchup of unbeatens pits a Carthage team that’s looking for its fifth title in seven years against a Wimberley squad that is back in the title game for the second time in four years and 11 years removed from being state champions.  Carthage (15-0) will face Wimberley (15-0) in the Class 4A Division II championship at 11 a.m. Friday.

Both teams have been putting up similar numbers this season with the Bulldogs averaging 48.3 points per game under coach Scott Surratt to the Texans’ 45.4 points per game under coach Doug Warren. Defensively, the Bulldogs are allowing 12.5 points per game to the Texans’ 13.8 points per game. The Bulldogs are in quest of the ninth championship in program history while the Texans are going for No. 3.

Connor Cuff and LaRandion Dowden led Carthage past Glen Rose 42-35 in the semis, combining for five touchdowns, while Wimberley scored 24 straight points in the second half to beat Cuero 42-36.

Longtime Albany coach seeks first title in five tries

Albany hasn’t captured a state title since going back-to-back in 1960-61.

Longtime coach Denny Faith has been close four times in his 36 seasons. Faith led Albany to the title game in 1991, but the Lions fell to Schulenburg 21-0. The Lions returned 18 years later only to suffer a 38-24 loss to Cayuga. In 2014-15, the Lions fell to Bremond 28-21 and again the next year 35-20. Since then, the Lions have continued their dominance in district play, going unbeaten 14 of the past 15 seasons.

The Lions have scored at least 35 points in all playoff contests and are averaging 52 points per game under quarterback Cole Chapman, who finished with three touchdowns in a win over New Home in the semis.

Standing in their way this time is an unbeaten Mart squad that’s looking for its ninth state title in program history. The Mustangs are averaging 57 points per game while limiting opponents to just under seven points under coach Kevin Hoffman. Albany (13-2) will take on Mart (15-0) in the Class 2A Division II championship at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

North Shore ready for Round 4 against Duncanville

Jon Poorman, Staff writer high school sports coordinator for the Houston Chronicle

Dec. 14, 2022: Dec. 14, 2022 8:41 a.m.

Jon Kay knows exactly what kind of battle his players are getting into this week.

When North Shore takes the field at AT&T Stadium for the UIL Class 6A Division I state championship game, a familiar opponent will be standing on the opposite sideline.

The Mustangs have been kryptonite for Duncanville since 2018 when the programs first clashed for the state crown. Since then, the teams have met in the season finale two more times, including North Shore’s 17-10 victory last December. Duncanville is still searching for its first victory in the series.

Perhaps the fourth time will be the charm for the Panthers. Or perhaps North Shore will claim title No. 6. It will all be settled at 7 p.m. Saturday in Arlington in the final contest of the 2022 season.

“They’re a phenomenal program,” Kay said Tuesday afternoon. “Their success speaks for itself, so just the opportunity to travel up there, pretty close to their home stadium, and play them for all these years has done nothing but made us better. It’s a great opportunity, and we’re looking forward to it.”

North Shore (15-0) jumped ahead of Duncanville (14-0) in the latest national rankings from USA Today this week. The Mustangs came in at No. 8, while Duncanville remained at 9.

Rankings won’t mean much come Saturday, however, as the Lone Star State’s finest test their mettle between the lines. North Shore has won 28 consecutive games and is 74-3 since the beginning of the 2018 season. Duncanville has gone 66-6 in that span with half of those losses coming against the Mustangs.

North Shore defeated Austin Westlake 49-34 in the semifinals last week, ending the Chaparrals’ 54-game winning streak and hopes for a fourth consecutive state championship.

Duncanville, meanwhile, was dominant during a 41-0 victory over Prosper. The Panthers have been playing lights-out in the postseason, outscoring their opponents 219-37. Duncanville is holding opponents to just 9.6 points and 193.2 yards per game. The playoffs have seen those numbers dip to 7.4 and 179.6.

“I think it’s just their overall team speed and just their flat aggressiveness as a football team,” Kay said of what stands out most about the Panthers this season. “They want to get down in the trenches and do some stuff, but they’re explosive, and they’ve got speed all over the place. They play some unbelievable defense, and they’re great on special teams. You can see why they’re undefeated.”

Here’s a look at the three previous meetings between the programs.

2018 — North Shore 41, Duncanville 36

This one will live in Texas high school football lore forever. North Shore quarterback Dematrius Davis — perhaps the greatest signal-caller to ever come through the program — heaved a Hail Mary into the back right corner of the end zone, and receiver A.J. Carter leaped to make the 45-yard catch as time expired. That last-ditch effort handed the Mustangs a perfect 16-0 season and their third state championship. It was the second title under Kay’s leadership. Davis, a sophomore at the time, was outstanding in the contest, completing 19-of-28 passes for 333 yards and five touchdowns. “We practice it every Thursday at the end of practice,” said Davis, who accounted for more than 10,500 yards during his high school career. “We never thought we would do it, but we did it today, and it happened. It worked.”

2019 — North Shore 31, Duncanville 17

Duncanville was seeking revenge after suffering the heartbreak of the Hail Mary a year prior. But Davis and company were just too much this time around. The Panthers were playing without starting quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson, who tore his ACL a week before in the state semifinals. North Shore was without star running back Zach Evans, who was unavailable for the game for violating team rules. But Roger Hagan took his place and rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries to lead the offense. Davis accounted for two scores as well, including a 44-yard pass to Charles King with 2:33 to play. The North Shore defense stood tall, shutting out Duncanville over the final two quarters.

2021 — North Shore 17, Duncanville 10

This contest was a defensive battle. But it was a freshman quarterback who made perhaps the biggest play. Kaleb Bailey connected with David Amador on a 39-yard touchdown pass with just 2:53 remaining, and Jayven Anderson came up with an interception on the ensuing Duncanville drive to wrap up the Mustangs’ most recent state title. Bailey, who has been out with an injury since the fifth game of the 2022 season, was named the game’s offensive MVP after passing for 107 yards and two scores. The defense, meanwhile, limited Duncanville to just 192 total yards. Defensive lineman Ronald Wilson and linebacker Kent Battle led the charge on that side of the ball. “We knew what kind of game it was going to be,” Kay said. “Just proud as hell of our kids going in there and just taking a punch and throwing a punch.”

Where was he at before? That name sounded familiar and couldn’t remember…

Richland Springs, Mount Enterprise, Strawn, and now Benjamin just in the last 4 years plus more before that.

Dad is a coach and has 3 boys that were all really good.  Looks like he moves them around to the highest bidder
