(3) the clock will continue to run after an offense gains a first down except inside of two minutes in a half. (4) the clock will continue to run after an incomplete pass once the ball is spotted for play. Quote

A team intentionally spiking the ball to stop the clock and having time to get what personnel in (ie. kicking team, etc.) before official spots the ball could be controversial. Some officiating crews are quicker spotting the ball than others or do it inconsistently. Quote
