Winningest programs in Texas High School Football history

This was my post from 01/27/20 on the 6A board.

"Below are my top 25 programs of all time, now I just need to narrow it down to the top 5.

Katy, SLC, Highland Park, Lake Travis, Aledo, Mart, Carthage, Abilene, Daingerfield, Ennis, Brownwood, Refugio, Permian, Longview, Austin Westlake, WOS, Celina, Canadian, Allen, Judson, Newton, Plano, Stamford, Cameron Yoe and Bremond.

You mention "continued success throughout the programs entire history" so that is something I will take into account.

Final answer:

#5 West Orange-Stark- I was hesitant to put this team on my list because I wanted to only have teams that have played 50+ years. Anything less than that I dont feel would be enough of a sample size to really gauge the program. Having said all of that its hard to argue with their success. They are 416-100-3 all time with 4 state titles. They won back to back two different times, '86-'87 and '15-'16. Since they began playing football in 1977 they have only 1 season under .500! Hard to keep them off my list with those numbers.

#4 Mart- They had a rough start from 1912-1928 but after that Mart has been pretty good. They have an overall record of 776-356-43 with 8 state titles. Strictly speaking about the playoffs Mart is 119-38-2. In the last 21 years Mart has won 6 of their 8 titles. Even without the wins of late they really dont have a terrible record year to year.

#3 Odessa Permian- One of the teams on my Mount Rushmore checks in at number 3. It seems like they were off to winning a title in each decade since their program started but they have been average as of late. Permian is 541-173-13 overall with 6 state titles. They have a title in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Since 1999 Permian has been average to slighty above. If they won a title in the 2000's then they would be higher on my list.

#2 Southlake Carroll- Another of the teams I had on my Mount Rushmore makes an appearance in my top 5 programs. Carroll has an all time record of 545-153-8 with a ridiculous playoff record of 111-28-1. Their 8 state titles have come over an impressive span from 1988-2011. Southlake comes in at #2 all time in win percentage with a minimum of 500 games played.

#1 Highland Park- As a program they are the most impressive to me. Overall record is 843-259-27. They have 6 titles overall with 3 coming 2016-2018. If you look at their record each year they never really have a dip in success. From 1960 to 1975 I would say is the roughest time for them but they still were over .500 in 10 of the 16 seasons. Maybe they have a rough couple seasons but they always bounce back and win 9 or 10 games. Each decade since the 1920's they have winning teams and have never gone 0-10."

According to the Indians site they sit at 643 and 366. That looks like 66.33%. Where does that fall on the list?

well, most of the post are using texashighschoolfootballhistory.com  as the reference. That site has PNG  631-367-33 on their Season record page.

Then on the all time win % page they have em at 609-350-34 which = .6133

.6133 is the 73 spot on the list.

The win% page does not line up correctly with the team and the info to the side. Use the Season Records.

PNG 631-367-33 = .612

I've seen this posted here too. Now after the past 3 seasons, I think we still belong on the list of 25. But would you still have us in the top 5?

We just had our 2nd sub .500 season. We're getting closer to that 50 year mark which will be in 2026. By then we should have another set of back to backs. And be moving up the list.

I know it sounds crazy right.

Hooks took 6 years to win his 1st of 2

Cornel, 5 years for the same thing.

Our new elite coach will win in only 4 years, 2025. And go back to back in 26. But I predict another in 27. Making him the first coach to win 3 here.

Thats a good question. Probably would have to take another look at all that info and reassess everything. Of the top of my head WOS might not make top 5 again. But like I said I'd have to look at all the numbers.

Personally, I think playoff win percentage is a great stat. See who wins when everything is all on the line! Here is the playoff win percentage for each of the top 10 teams on the all-time win percentage list.

1. West Orange Stark 71.3%

2. Southlake Carroll 79.6%

3. Austin Westlake 74.3%

4. Highland Park 64.8%

5. Odessa Permian 71.3%

6. Euless Trinity 66.9%

7. Refugio 73.7%

8. Houston Yates 50%

9. Dallas Carter 51.7%

10. Converse Judson 72.7%

That's a good one. If a team just stopped making the playoffs that stat would be frozen though.

Whats cool is that no matter what way you slice the pie, you are always chasing someone else. Most total wins, most championships, highest percentage, longest playoff streak, ect, ect, ect.... Someone is always better than you.

Had enough return last year to make a difference and as we all know it didn’t!Returning players are irrelevant unless scheme changes imo, hopefully something changes.

I don’t know friend some nuts are hard to crack... Imo why change a defense that has worked and brought the school several championships, help me to understand that!  What needs an overhaul is the offense, running the ball all the time is not working for us. JMO!

I think that is the plan. To develop D1 talent on Offense. Think the problem with the Defense was the coaches were not familiar with it. They tried it and it didn't work. Let's see how well they adapt with a year under their belt. 🧢

    • naw, maaaaybe 7, definitely not 8 deep.  today im avoiding sitting by #10s parents, had to move away yesterday.   "put my son back in jub, put my son back in"  and then crying on every little touch of someone.    lets ball out today ktz!
    • Very close game until the 2nd half (mostly the 4th) when Orangefield came unraveled. Worse defensive effort I have seen out of the Bobcats in three years. This team has to get back on D and quit getting beat over the top when pressing. Offensively, non ball handlers continually turn it over and their shot selection is poor. Basic basketball, such as: defensive hustle, boxing out, and taking care of the basketball are the areas the Bobcats need to work on most. Whitmire will get them on point, but he shouldn't have to coach effort at the Varsity Level.  We'll be at McNeese this Friday night at 6pm.
    • I don’t benefit from it, that’s not my area.  But the average cost to imprison someone is around $15k per year (on average in the US) and capital cases cost somewhere between $1.5-$3M with over half being overturned or reduced to life in prison anyway.  These numbers may be inflated since the last report I read but I’m sure it would be on both sides and higher on the DP side if anything. So what’s the point?  We feel better because we got to return the favor on someone (hopefully) who committed a heinous crime?  And I don’t know I can say we have “complicated” it. Which appeal should we cut out?  Our justice system has a pecking order and we have higher courts for a reason. When we are about to impose the ultimate judgment, should we cut steps that other cases have to save a buck?  Or do we not pay for an indigent person’s experts at the trial court level because it’s too expensive? Or do we just lock them up and throw away the key (unless we later find out they weren’t actually guilty, in which case we have a key and a life we haven’t unjustly ended) and save a ton of money?  Seems to me to be an obvious solution but I’m more of a pragmatist.
    • 1 thing for certain. Coach Earned 3 more years to figure it out lol
