Lady Cardinals Basketball Hosts William Carey Monday at 4 p.m.

James Naismith's original rules of basketball on display on Montagne concourse

Nov. 18, 2007

BEAUMONT - As the Lamar University women's basketball team prepares to host the Lady Saders of William Carey on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m., Lady Cardinals fans can prepare to see history as James Naismith's original rules of basketball will be on display on the Montagne Center upper concourse.

Naismith created the game of basketball in 1891 and the original rules were devised in 1892. In 1959, James Naismith was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, called the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.

Fans can visit the display before and after the women's game against William Carey and will also have the opportunity to visit the exhibit before and after men's game against Wyoming which tips off at 7 p.m. The men's game is being billed as the `can the Cowboys' game, in which fans who bring a canned good to the game will receive a half price ticket.

"For Lamar University to have the opportunity to display the original rules of basketball at the Montagne Center is very special," women's head coach Larry Tidwell said. "This display is only going to be available for public viewing for short time before it goes to the Smithsonian Museum. We are honored to have it here."

The Lady Cardinals enter Monday's game with a 2-2 record, on the heels of a 58-43 win over the Texas Southern Tigers in Houston on Saturday evening. The win snapped a two game skid in which LU fell to Big XII foes Oklahoma State and Texas on Monday and Thursday.

The Lady Cards have been led by sophomore Brittney Williams who is averaging 13.8 points per game, while freshman Tamara Abalde is averaging 13 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Junior Nikki Williams is averaging 11.3 points per game and Aida Bakhos has been strong on the boards, averaging 7.8 rebounds per game.

William Carey enters the game with a 1-1 record after a season opening win over Concordia College and a loss at the University of Auburn-Montgomery. The Lady Saders defeated Concordia 60-54 on November 7, and fell to Montgomery 51-40 on November 13.

After Monday's game the Lady Cardinals will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Wiley College at 4:00 at the Montagne Center. The women's game will tip off a double header with the LU men who take on Oral Roberts at 7 p.m.

Coach Tidwell will have this team playing well in conference. They could use a post besides Brittney Williams. Hopefully, I'll make part if not all of this game today.
