If the students vote in favor of a return of the pigskin to the Lamar campus throw out some names you'd like the administration to look at.

There have been a few good coaches fired or resign in the past week. One of them has coached in the SLC, coached at the same school Billy Tubbs was at prior to returning to Lamar. Coach Tubbs has hired two people who coached at the Fort Worth school. The two are Coach Tidwell and Coach Aldrich.

Now, I'm not crazy about the coach mentioned above but he has good credentials if he can learn from his poor choices and lack of character at times. This coach will not get another major job right away. He'll either go into doing TV stuff for ESPN, FOX, or one of the other sports channels or he'll take a small college job for 4 or 5 years be successful, show he has learned from his mistakes and then he'll get another major offer. You don't get hired at A&M, Alabama and TCU and not be a good coach. He needs to show people he is a good man too.

Now, the man I wish would take the job considering Todd Dodge is not available is the prior coach at A&M. I believe he wants to coach again if it is a good fit for him. He is a local hero growing up in Orange and is still beloved by many football fans. I'm talking about R.C. Slocum. If you live in SE Texas and either have children, relatives or you have loyalties to Lamar University and this man doesn't fire you up to attend a few Lamar football games then no one will.

I say R.C. Slocum with Craig Stump as the OC. Let Slocum get the program off the ground, then after 6-7 years, turn it over to Stump.

I agree with both you guys. R.C. Slocum should be our #1 target. He will provide excitement from the day he is hired to the first game. On name along he'll he able to walk into parents kitchens, living rooms and tell them he will take care of their son. He did it at A&M. You did not hear of crimes involving players at A&M. The only negative I've ever heard about R.C is he threw a couple assistants under the bus to save his job. I don't think we'd have to worry about that happening here. Then Lamar needs to win the recruit wars for players versus McNeese. I know R.C is a alumnus of that fine university but so is our President. Dr Simmons is a MSU graduate so it is possible.

Some may say there is no way Lamar can afford a coach of this status. Well to be honest, Lamar can't afford not to get the very best possible person. LU will be spending over $25 million just to get the program off the ground. I'll go out on a limb and say LU could offer $200,000-$300,000 annually to the head coach. You may say, there is no way in censor Lamar can pay a Football coach that kind of money. The TSUS would have to approve such a contract. My answer is you are correct the TSUS would not allow Lamar to spend that type of money for an athletic employee. But, they can't say how much the public or donations can go toward the coach's salary. Believe me, there are probably hundreds of millionaires here in SE Texas. If you drove in my brothers addition you'd see homes from $300,000 to over a $1 million. I personally have a relative who lives in a $1 million dollar home on Pleasure Island. There is money is SE Texas.

Graig Stump would be a great choice for Lamar and R.C. Slocum. Where did Graig play college football after an All-American career at Thomas Jefferson? Oh, that's right he starred for the Aggies. So, they know one another already quite well. I believe after spending time under R.C. Coach Stump would be an excellent choice as HC.

So, here is my breakdown in salaries, tops $300,000 for the HC. $100,000 for the OC and DC. Then between $40,000 and $60,000 for the position coaches, special teams coach and strengh and conditioning coach. The last mentioned coach could work with all the athletics at Lamar. He's duties could cover training all the athletes and a man who is good at knowing how to train young people for different sports is a Lamar alumnus living in SE Texas. You don't train a o-lineman or d-lineman the same as a QB, RB or WR. Same applies for football players, basketball players, soccer players, tennis players and so on.

Now, I'm not putting information on this website as to how I know Lamar could afford these salaries. All I can say is join the Cardinal Club. Make a few donations and then you too will know some things that haven't been made public. There is a reason why the administration is seeking the students approval by vote. One it will let them know how much students want the sport back and two is to assist with the yearly budget of the program.

This administration will make sure the program is successful on the field and off or they won't move forward with the sport. Like Rush Wood stated "you don't get steak and lobster football on a hamburger budget."

SE Texas will not support "hamburger football on the college level" when there is so much great HS football on Friday nights. Our president and AD know this so I don't expect to be competing with UT, A&M or even TCU and UH for athletes but we'll be in the hunt for any other athlete not recruited by the Top tier programs in the state. In time, I do think we may be fighting UH for athletes because we could be in the same conference in 5-10 years.

I've read a few places that people will not support Lamar playing in the SLC if there is a plan to move out of the SLC. Long term I agree, most fan's around here would prefer seeing a higher level of competition in all sports but don't think our AD is going to place all our cards on the table just yet. If Lamar announced a plan for FBS football the SLC "could" force Lamar to play as an independent. That would not be in our best interest. We'll start off in the SLC but hopefully in my lifetime Lamar will be in another conference.

Very informative post there abovetherim.  I do hope the deep pockets in SETX do support football over the long haul.  Not counting the startup costs, they'll need to spend at least $3 million a year on football.  Throw in softball, Lamar's athletic budget will almost double from $4.5 last year to probably around $8 to $9 million a year.  About $2 million will come from student fees and the rest from donations.  That's quite a commitment, and without moving up to a better conference, it'll be hard to keep. 

I don't agree with UNLV that 2010/2011 is the year LU has to join a FBS conference.  I think that's when schools will start to change conferences, and sometime after that Lamar will have a chance to move to a better conference.  I'm sure Tubbs is already working behind the scenes now to make sure Lamar gets in on a better conference.  With a larger stadium and R.C. Slocum as the HC, Lamar should be able to make the move up.

No coach, when the shuffling begin and end, each conference will have 12. LU can't wait around to be

13th because its not gonna happen. There will be 2 mid-majors that covers this area. SWC and Sunbelt.

CUSA will fold or move east to be a Florida strong conference. After the dust settles, you are stuck where

you are for at least 30 years.

Coachacola, I know I get a little long winded at times and agree with the vast majority of your post and those of UNLV too. I think he knows a lot more about the conference shuffle than I do.

That said if the students past the vote on football you need to remember there are four semester's in a school year so the amount raise in student fees will be more than $2 million. Lamar normally has about 8,000 full-time students in the summer sessions. That could lead from $500,000-$1,000,000 depending on the amount of credit hours taken.

It would not be fair to only have a athletic fee for the fall and spring semesters. Then if enrollment increases you have to factor this in.

This is why it is critical the students pass the athletic fee. Without it, there probably will not be a football program.

I'll fill you in on some information that can't be made public but donations is why we need a big name coach willing to take the program from the ground up. It isn't because Craig Stump can't do the job. He'll be a great college head coach. Like someone stated he has 10 years of college assistant coaching experience. I just don't think Lamar will hire a HS coach to start the program. He could be like Coach Roc. Be a OC for four years then the job is his.

Exactly, Stump has the fire and skills, Stumps lacks the name to lure the best not taken by UT.
