Guest abovetherim Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 BATON ROUGE, La. - Poor shooting from the field and from the charity strip by the Nicholls Colonels led to the LSU Tigers 68-41 victory in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Wednesday night. Nicholls shot 30.2 percent (16-of-53) from the floor, 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from three point territory, and 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from the free throw line in the game. LSU shot 52.1 percent (25-of-48) from field goal range, 35 percent (7-of-20) from behind the arc, and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the charity stripe. "We didn't make shots when it counted, and we lacked some intensity at critical times in the game," said head coach J.P. Piper. "Early on we caused some problems for them (LSU), but in the second half we lacked mental toughness, and they capitalized on our mistakes." Scoring in double figures for the Colonels (1-6) were junior Ryan Bathie and sophomore Michael Czepil. Bathie finished with 11, while Czepil had 10 in the loss to go along with four steals. Game high in rebounds for Nicholls was senior Adonis Gray with five. The Tigers (4-2) were led by Marcus Thornton with 24 points and six rebounds in the victory. Chris Johnson had 16 and Bo Spencer had 11 to round out the double digit scorers for LSU. LSU went into the locker room at half time nursing a 31-19 lead as they shot 50 percent (11-of-22) from field goal range. In the second period, the Tigers started to pull away as they went on an 18-3 run that lasted over five minutes. LSU extended its lead to as many as 29 points at the 3:07 mark of the second half, and went on to win 68-41. The Tigers won the rebounding battle 39-to-28, but the Colonels did force 21 turnovers to their own 19 and record 14 steals to LSU's seven. Nicholls will hit the hardwood away from home again next time out, but will do so close to home as the Colonels travel to New Orleans to take on the Privateers on Saturday at 7 p.m.
