hockeyfan Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=3133171HARBORCREEK, Pa. -- A bus carrying members of a New York minor league hockey team struck the back of a tractor-trailer and went down an embankment, seriously injuring the bus driver and causing minor injuries to several players.The Elmira Jackals of the ECHL were returning home after a 7-1 loss Wednesday in Cincinnati when the accident happened about 4:15 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 90 about 35 miles from the Ohio border, police said.The bus driver, 56-year-old Kenneth Nance of Blossburg, was trapped in the wreckage before he was flown to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, police said. Nance was in serious condition in the intensive-care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said.Nance, who was employed by JGM Coach Co. of Pennsylvania, was in the intensive-care unit, Jackals general manager Robbie Nichols said."Some players were tossed and thrown around the bus," Nichols said. "We have some minor injuries. We don't know the extent of the injuries."No players were hospitalized. The team sent a bus to pick them up.Elmira is the affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets.

It happened a little after four this morning on Interstate 90 in Harborcreek.First Arena General Manager Robbie Nichols tells us the bus driver, 56 year old Kenneth Nance of Blossburg, says he was reaching for something when he slammed into the back of a tractor trailer. The bus went off the road and traveled 300 feet down an embankment before it stopped.It took rescue workers almost two hours to get Nance out of the bus. He was life-lighted to the hospital and was last reported in serious condition.Some of the players suffered minor injuries, including goalie Dan LaCosta, who injured his ankle."When the call came in at 4:15 I had that "oh no" feeling. It's just terrible for the guys. It's hard enough to play this sport but to travel around the country on buses and things like that. And, for something like this to happen is like a nightmare come true," says Nichols.
