Guest abovetherim Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 BEAUMONT, Texas - Athletes from the Lamar University athletic department will be participating in a Habitat for Humanity project all day Saturday on 7th Avenue in Port Arthur, helping to build a home for a family in the Golden Triangle community. Saturday's project was planned by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, which helps coordinate community service activities for LU's athletes. The SAAC committee chose to work with Habitat for Humanity because it would give them the opportunity to work on a project which would bring a lifetime dream to reality for a local family. "It is important for our athletes to get involved in the community," Senior Woman Administrator and SAAC advisor Helene Thill said. "We depend on the Golden Triangle community for support of our athletics, and now the athletes have the opportunity to give back to the community." Athletes from baseball, volleyball, track and cross country, tennis and golf will be participating in Saturday's work. Men's and women's basketball will not able to join in the effort, as they will be on the road for competition. Men's basketball will be in DeKalb, Ill. for a showdown with Northern Illinois, while the Lady Cards will be in Chicago, Ill. taking on Chicago State. Habitat has built more than 225,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1 million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. HFHI was founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller along with his wife Linda. The Lamar SAAC offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes lives. The SAAC is dedicated to promoting a positive student-athlete image within the athletic programs and creating the executive leaders of tomorrow. The mission of the NCAA and Lamar University's SAAC is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image. http://www.southland.org/ViewArticle.dbml?temp_site=NO&DB_OEM_ID=18400&ATCLID=1329863
