Lady Cards Fly North For Showdown with Chicago State

Lamar looks to extend winning streak to five games

CHICAGO - After extending their unbeaten streak to four straight games with a win on Tuesday night, the Lamar University women's basketball team will hit the road for a non conference showdown against the Chicago State Cougars at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center at 2 p.m.

This will be the second meeting between the Lady Cardinals and Chicago State. The two teams met in Beaumont last year, where Lamar handed the Cougars a 61-56 loss at the Montagne Center. The Lady Cardinals enter Saturday's game with a 5-2 record, on the heels of a 61-54 win over IUPUI at the Montagne Center on Tuesday night. The Lady Cards notched their fourth straight win behind the offensive firepower of sophomore Brittney Williams and junior Nikki Williams.

Lamar is led in scoring by freshman Tamara Abalde, who is averaging a Southland Conference-best 17 points per game along with 6.6 rebounds per game, while sophomore Brittney Williams is averaging 13 points per game which ranks ninth in the SLC. Junior Nikki Williams is averaging 12.3 points per game and has a team-high 21 steals while senior Aida Bakhos leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game. Junior Agnija Reke has also been solid for the Lady Cards, passing out a team-high 33 assists.

As a team the Lady Cardinals are shooting .391 from the field and have out scored their opponents 65.4 to 60.4. Lamar has also controlled the boards this season, out rebounding their opponents 41 to 37.1.   

Chicago State enters Saturday's game with a 3-2 record, having won their last two games on the road. They rolled over Grambling on the road on Tuesday night 81-59 and edged out Loyola on November 20 55-53.

The Cougars are led by junior Jasmin Dixon's 19.3 points and six rebounds per game, while sophomore Alyssa Waldon is averaging 10.8 points and passed out a team-high 20 assists. Freshman Courtney Waldon has also made an immediate impact for CSU, scoring 10.2 points and grabbing a team-high 6.2 rebounds per game.

As a team Chicago State has out scored their opponents 68.8 to 65.2 this season, while shooting .423 from the field. Their opponents have won the rebounding battle though, out rebounding the Cougars 44.2 to 34.8. After Saturday's game the Lady Cardinals will return to action on Monday, when they take on the Texas Southern Tigers at noon at the Montagne Center. Tuesday's game will be "Ladies Day Out", with all ladies receiving half price tickets to the game.
