Lady Cardinals look to remain perfect at home

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team returns to the hardwood looking to bounce back from a tough loss on Saturday as they play host to Texas Southern University in a mid-day showdown at the Montagne Center.

The Lady Cardinals have several special promotions going on for Tuesday's game. The first promotion is Ladies Day Out, with all ladies receiving half price tickets to the game. The game will also give students involved in the character counts program with the LU women's team a chance to see the Lady Cards in action. With the two promotions going on, LU will be supporting the "Think Pink" campaign to support breast cancer research. Six hundred middle school girls wearing pink shirts, so please wear your pink shirt to the game to support the cause.

This will be the 31st meeting between Lamar and Texas Southern, with the Lady Cards holding a 5-3 record and the Lady Tigers coming in at 1-4 on the season. Lamar holds a 22-8 advantage in the win column over TSU after posting a 58-43 when the two teams met back on November 17. Lamar enters Tuesday's game with a 5-3 record, on the heels of a 57-49 loss at Chicago State on Saturday afternoon, a loss that snapped a four game winning streak for LU. The Lady Cardinals are unbeaten at home this year, winning their four games by an average of 30 points.

Lamar is led in scoring by freshman Tamara Abalde, who is averaging a Southland Conference-best 17 points per game along with 6.9 rebounds per game, while sophomore Brittney Williams is averaging 12.4 points per game which ranks 12th in the SLC. Junior Nikki Williams is averaging 11.9 points per game, 14th in the SLC, and has a team-high 22 steals while senior Aida Bakhos leads the team and is seventh in the conference with 7.6 rebounds per game. Junior Agnija Reke has also been solid for the Lady Cards, passing out a team-high 36 assists.

 

As a team the Lady Cardinals are shooting .371 from the field and have out scored their opponents 63.4 to 60. Lamar has also controlled the boards this season, out rebounding their opponents 41.2 to 37.4. Texas Southern enters the game with a 1-4 record, on the heels of their first win of the season, a 52-48 victory over Oral Roberts on Saturday in Houston.

The Lady Tigers are led by Camille Parks who is averaging 10.4 points per game and has 10 steals on the year. Jamelah Lewis has also been a key contributor for TSU, averaging 9.2 points per game while Brandi Justice has led them in rebounding with 6.5 boards per game.

Texas Southern is averaging 48.6 points per game while giving up 60 points per contest, while also being out rebounded 44.2 to 40.2 this season. The Lady Tigers have posted a team shooting percentage of .296, while allowing their opponents to shoot .355 from the field.

After Tuesday's game the Lady Cardinals will take a break for finals before returning to the court on December 18 when they take on New Mexico State in Las Cruces, New Mexico at 7:05 p.m.

I think that is a great idea of getting the youth of Beaumont interested in Lamar athletics. I wish they could have got other districts involved. I guess you got to start somewhere and I really believe the interest in a school starts at an early age. Great job by the athletic department!
