BEAUMONT - Behind the hot three point shooting of Emily Spickler and a solid team performance from the free throw line the Lamar University women's basketball team picked up a 57-47 win over Texas Southern Tuesday afternoon at the Montagne Center.

The Lady Cardinals, who will be in action again on December 18 when they take on New Mexico State in Las Cruces, New Mexico, improved to 6-3 on the year and remain unbeaten at the Montagne Center this season with the win. Texas Southern had a two game win streak snapped with the loss and fall to 2-5 on the year.

The Lady Cads got off to a sluggish start offensively, missing their first 12 shots before Trashanna Smith sank a layup with 12:16 to play in the first half. Smith's layup knotted the game at 10-10 and broke the ice for LU offensively.

Two possessions later Spickler drained her first triple of the game, draining a jumper from the corner to give Lamar a 13-12 lead, their first since the 16:33 mark of the first half. Spickler remained the Lady Cards No. 1 threat from the floor for the remainder of the half, answering the Lady Tigers every move.

After a jumper by Nikki Williams gave Lamar a 21-19 lead, Spickler nailed her fourth three pointer of the opening half to give LU a five point lead at 24-19. Her fifth three pointer of the game came with 1:58 to play in the half, giving Lamar a 28-14 lead. She finished the half 5-7 from behind the arc, leading LU with 15 points.

The Lady Cards added a jumper by Brittney Williams with 17 seconds to play to take 30-24 lead into halftime. Lamar held the six point lead despite shooting just 26.7 percent from the field while Texas Southern shot 34.6 percent.

In the second half the Lady Cardinals stretched their lead to as many a 12 points at 42-30, but TSU would not go down without a fight. The Lady Tigers slowly chipped away at the Lamar lead and closed to within one point at 48-47 with 3:17 to play.

Lamar responded to the TSU run by closing out the game on a 9-0 run to seal the win. The run began with a Tamara Abalde jumper in the paint with 2:57 to play and was capped off with an Aida Bakhos layup with 41 seconds to play giving LU their fifth straight win at home this season.

Spickler finished the game with a career-best 15 points while Brittney Williams and Nikki Williams each chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds. Bakhos led the way for the Lady Cardinals on the glass, picking up a game-high 10 rebounds.

Texas Southern was led by Jamelah Lewis and Camille Parks who scored 13 and 11 points respectively. The Lady Tigers were led in rebounding by Lewis who picked up six boards, while they picked up 13 team rebounds.

The Lady Cardinals 15-17 performance from the free throw line way key in the victory, as TSU was just 5-9 from the charity stripe. Both teams shot 30.4 percent from the floor, going 17-56 from the field while both teams knocked down eight three pointers. Way to go ladies, solid win! Different from the men's team everyone contributes for a total TEAM effort. Someone steps up shooting, rebounding, playing good defense.  Then notice the TO's for the ladies. They had 13 for the whole game. The men's have had that total in one half.

Congratulations Lady Cards!!!!
