Guest abovetherim Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 Tubbs, who played basketball at LU in the 1950s and has coached the team twice, said he can remember when the Cardinals had a football team - and a good one at that.Among active members in the Southland Conference, Lamar actually ranks second with four league championships - and the Cardinals haven't played a down of football since 1989, when university regents voted 5-4 to kill the program. "You have to remember: McNeese State has won the most Southland Conference championships in football (11). But we're still second," Tubbs said. "We can do it here, and we can do it right. But we can't do it halfway. ... The people who say they want football back, we need them to step up."http://www.southeasttexaslive.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=19084754&BRD=2287&PAG=461&dept_id=512588&rfi=6
