Strake Jesuit boys look good at interstate tourney

Navasota, Cypress Springs make strides among girls; Bone makes magazine cover

Strake Jesuit wins Classic

Strake Jesuit (11-3) bounced back nicely from its district-opening loss to Cypress Springs last week by winning the Lee College Classic championship with wins over Barbers Hill, Brazoswood, Westgate (La.) and St. Thomas More (La.).

Junior guard Joey Brooks was named the tournament MVP, and guard Tim Frazier was selected to the all-tournament team.

Friendswood sweeps

Friendswood had a successful weekend in Corpus Christi at the Pride of Texas tournament.

The Mustangs (8-3), ranked 14th in the state in Class 4A, won all five games they played, which included wins over Second Baptist (No. 10 ranked private school) and Corpus Christi West Oso (No. 5 in 3A).

Dulles carries banner for 5A

Several other area teams had strong showings in tournament play. Dulles (12-0), the only remaining undefeated Class 5A team in the area, took the Outback Tournament title with a 65-50 win over Bush. HCYA (12-2) surprised by taking the Cy-Fair ISD Invitational, and Aldine improved to 10-2 on the season after winning a tournament at Lamar University.

By the numbers

• 1 — Loss for Cypress Woods in the Cy-Fair ISD tournament. The Wildcats went 4-1 in the tournament with their only setback coming to tournament champion HCYA.

• 2 — Wins for Kingwood Park at the Bagg Invitational in Fort Worth. The Panthers went 2-2 and claimed fourth place.

• 4 — Losses by two points or less for Wallis Brazos (3-6) this season.

• 5 — Members of Fort Bend Baptist who were named to the all-tournament team in the Red River Shootout — Shashank Ranganthan (MVP), Adam Adams, Bryan Davis, Dusty Dishman, Hunter Gilbert.

• 35.4 — Average points allowed by Lamar in its last five games.

Jackson shines

Cypress Springs is off to quite a start and one big reason is senior guard NiCoya Jackson.

Jackson was named Most Valuable Player of the Spring Branch ISD tournament over the weekend, which the Panthers (16-3) won. For the season, Jackson is averaging 11.5 points, five assists and four steals per game.

Navasota extends streak

Navasota won its second consecutive tournament title in the Sealy Classic over the weekend.

The Rattlers (16-1) defeated Lamar Consolidated (No. 11 in the state) 54-39 in the championship game and have won 15 consecutive games.

Elite honor for Bone

Dulles girls post Kelsey Bone will be featured on the December cover of Rise Magazine. Bone is the magazine's top-ranked junior.

Bone has been no stranger to success in her basketball career.

Aside from being a standout at Dulles, she also was on the gold-medal team at the USA Youth Festival over the summer in Colorado Springs and was recently one of two juniors selected to the Sporting News All-America first team.

Bone is averaging a double-double this season with 18 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Vikings, who are 13-3 on the season.

FB Baptist leaves mark

The Fort Bend Baptist girls had a solid showing in the Red River Shootout in Muenster in North Texas over the weekend. The Eagles took second place, and Brianne Hodenfield and Mary Hannah Donaldson were named to the all-tournament team.

By the numbers

• 0 — Losses by Dulles to unranked teams. The Vikings' only losses are twice to Cy-Fair (No. 5 in the state) and Bellaire (No. 3). The Vikings (17-3) have finished in the top three of all three tournaments they've participated in.

• 2 — Double-doubles recorded by Cypress Falls' Katrina Lozano last week. She had 21 points and 20 rebounds in a 68-45 win over Oak Ridge and 15 points and 19 rebounds in a 66-50 victory over Morton Ranch.

• 3 — Double-doubles by Chavez sophomore Trezlyn Babbs last week. Babbs averaged 24 points and 18 rebounds.

• 21.8 — Scoring average for Cy-Fair post Nneka Ogwumike in her last five games.

• 32 — Points scored by Deer Park's Katie Whitaker in a 71-60 victory over La Porte in the Peggy Whitley Classic.
