Sterling, BH, Crosby in girls’ bracket

MONT BELVIEU — Baytown Sterling is one of seven Class 5A teams entered in the girls’ division of the Gulf Coast Classic and Barbers Hill and Crosby are among 10 4A teams that make up the 17-team bracket.

Action in the three-day event at Barbers Hill High School begins at 9 a.m. this morning, with Sterling taking on Mayde Creek. Crosby plays Port Arthur Memorial at 10:30 a.m. and Barbers Hill plays the West Brook-Nederland winner at 6 p.m.

A total of 13 boys’ and 17 girls’ teams are entered in the 27th combined Gulf Coast Classic, which features seven boys’ and nine girls’ games today.

Besides Sterling, other 5A entries are Spring, Mayde Creek, PA Memorial, Humble, West Brook and Hastings. La Marque, Vidor, Huffman, Port Neches-Groves, Nederland, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Lumberton and Smiley join Crosby and the host Lady Eagles in the girls’ field.

In all, the tournament will consist of 55 games and require the use of four gyms.

Still, that’s down some for the event which has been an annual fixture on the Barbers Hill and Gulf Coast calendar for decades.

“We try to get 32 teams (16 boys and 16 girls), but one year we had 35 girls’ teams,†recalls Barbers Hill athletic director Don Price. “We had to go to four days to get all the games in.

“When we first started doing it, there were not a lot of Christmas tournaments, but now a bunch have sprung up.â€

Former Barbers Hill coach Kenneth Skidmore was there when the decision was made to combine boys’ and girls’ tournaments and hold them the week between Christmas and New Years, a move he said happened in 1991.

“A long time ago, we used to have it before the Christmas holidays,†he said. “The girls’ tournament would be two weeks before we got out and the boys’ tournament a week later.

“But then people started having so many tests (before Christmas), we moved it back. People used to have their end-of-semester tests in January, but now they have them before Christmas.â€

Putting on the Gulf Coast Classic is a huge undertaking that requires a lot of gym space as well as people. Barbers Hill has been blessed with a multitude of gyms for many years.

This year’s tournament will be played at the Field House, High School Competition Gym and High School Auxiliary Gym today. The Middle School Gym will be added to site list for Friday’s 20-game schedule.

In years past, the Intermediate School’s gym, which features two courts, has also been used.

“For every game we play, we have to have three workers for the gate, the scoreboard and the scorebook,†Price said. “The booster club runs the hospitality room, where they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the boosters run the concession stands.

“We’ll spend $7,000 on officiating fees this year. Between the entry fees and gate we try to break even.â€

A relative newcomer, second-year Barbers Hill boys’ coach Nathan Toon marvels at the organization.

“The entire community runs it,†he says. “They’ve been doing it for many years and they really do a good job of running it. Coach Chancellor (girls’ head coach John Chancellor) and I really don’t do anything.

“It’s run by the coaching staff and the community.â€
