FriendswoodFan Posted December 18, 2007 Report Posted December 18, 2007 I think that I have a pretty good sense of how the Kelly folks (and others) think the Kelly boys would stack up against the better public school teams in the GT and in Region 3, but how do you think the girls rate vs. teams like PNG and Nederland, and then against teams like Friendswood, 7Lakes, Whitehouse, etc.
watash Posted December 19, 2007 Author Report Posted December 19, 2007 I could speculate about your first question but don't need to. Kelly is scheduled to play in the PNG tournament on January 18th-19th. We will have a direct comparison at that point. As with most varsity sports, soccer has reached a level where the most successful teams consist of players who play outside of school. Kelly has five freshman with several years of D-1 club experience and three or four seniors with club experience. While they are fairly young team overall, this makes them much deeper than past Kelly teams. In this area, it also means their starters have as much or more club experience than most other teams except West Brook(a very senior laden team)Arrangements are underway for an early January game or scrimmage with West Brook so we should also have a better perspective at that time.I'm not that familiar with the teams outside of this area. The Friendswood area has a lot of girls competing on club teams which probably makes the high school team deeper, more experienced and probably better than Kelly this year. Interestingly, Kelly's coach, Brittney Burdick took Friendswood to the state tournament when she coached there.
FriendswoodFan Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 By all accounts, Burdick was considered a really good coach, and a great person, during her time at Friendswood. You are in good hands with her at the helm. However, if memory serves me, I think she was the JV/assistant varsity coach who took over as head coach at the State tournament because the varsity coach was in the hospital.
sharkfutbol Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 Brittany is a great person and does a super job with the ladies. She is very knowledgeable about the game. And a very good person and a really good personality. She is a good person for Kelly to have, and has become a good friend.
watash Posted December 20, 2007 Author Report Posted December 20, 2007 Kelly is fortunate to have a coach with her experience and ability. Her impressive turnaround of the program speaks for itself. More importantly, she is a solid, quality person who sets a great example for the players.
