ORANGEFIELD — Softening up Bridge City’s defense by drilling 10 three-pointers and using a stifling defense for the final three periods, the Orangefield Bobcats buried the Cardinals 67-29 in District 21-3A action at Bobcat Gym Friday night.

Guard Tyler Angelle was the key cog in Orangefield’s arsenal as he sparked the Bobcats (11-4, 2-0) on the offensive end by draining four three-pointers on his way to a game-high 15 points.

The Cardinals fought hard in the first period, trailing just 16-12 but everything went south for Bridge City (5-9, 0-2) in the final 24 minutes.

An Angelle three-point bomb just before the half gave the Bobcats a 32-22 halftime edge. All five Orangefield fields goals in the second period came from beyond the three-point line.

“We were knocking them down from deep tonight,†said Bobcat head coach Rea Wrinkle. “That’s a good sign because we’ve struggled from the outside in the last couple games.â€

Wrinkle was thrilled about Angelle’s performance.

“You leave Tyler free, that kid will knock them down,†said Wrinkle. “I’m happy for him. He gives so much effort game after game on both the offensive end and defensive end.â€

It was all Bobcats after that as senior guard Jared Helton, who finished with six points and six steals led a stout second-half Orangefield defensive surge.

The Bobcats held the Cardinals to just seven second-half points and put up 32 of their own to walk away with the win.

Sophomores Derrick Evans and Zach Hayes combined for 22 Bobcat points with Evans scoring 12 and Hayes 10. Hayes also added six rebounds. Senior post Jeremy Granger added nine points and six boards while Casey Sparks sparked off the bench for Orangefield, tallying six points while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.

Post Corey Smith led the Cardinals with 10 points while he also grabbed five rebounds. The Bobcats did an excellent job in holding BC’s two leading scorers in Adam Sanchez and Jason Clark in check. Clark finished with seven points while Sanchez added four points and a team-leading eight rebounds.

“We did an excellent job at containing those two,†said Wrinkle. “Sanchez has really been on fire of late. We tried our best to not give up the lane and baseline to him and we did an excellent job.â€

The Cardinals finished with a 28-27 rebounding advantage. The Bobcats committed just 10 turnovers while the Cardinals coughed it up 18 times. Orangefield finished 16-of-26 from the free-throw line while the Cardinals went 3-of-6.

Both teams will compete in Bridge City’s Holiday Classic next Thursday and Friday. The Bobcats will take on Buna at 9 a.m. Thursday while the Cardinals will face Shepherd at 10:30 a.m.

Both teams will resume 21-3A action Jan. 4 when the Bobcats visit Hamshire-Fannett and the Cardinals will host Kirbyville.

Wrinkle is happy with the way the Bobcats have played in their first two 21-3A tilts. The Bobcats crushed Kirbyville 76-53 last Tuesday.

“It’s great to get these two early wins,†said Wrinkle. “We were fortunate to be able to play our first two games here at home. This district is so tough though and it’s going to get trickier down the road playing teams like Hardin-Jefferson, Silsbee, West Orange and Jasper. I like the mindset of our kids though. They’ll play hard, whoever they’re facing. Hopefully we can be right in the thick of it to the very end.â€
