71st Border Battle: La Porte vs. Deer Park

Recommended Posts

I know this might be considered outside of the region covered, my apologies.  Been on this forum for a long time, BH grad, but have a daughter on the Deer Escort team, so have vested interest in this game and Deer Park for the next few years, so might as well enjoy the journey lol.

La Porte is still homeless at least for the first part of the season, so Border Battle will be played at Abshier Stadium in Deer Park again this year.  DP took care of business last year, but I'm not familiar with what either team are bringing back from last year's squads.  Betting money would be on DP to win again this year, any thoughts to persuade me otherwise?  (Also, gearing up for the Week 3 matchup between Deer Park and Barbers Hill.....)

71st meeting. The Deer have won 3 in a row, and the series is basically knotted up. Both teams are coming off solid seasons and PO’s in 6A & 5A respectively. Last year, DP won 41-20 at Abshier & this year’s matchup is at Abshier again as La Porte completes their new stadium.

Reports are that both squads had really solid scrimmages.

Abshier is always a tough place to play. But, I’m actually going with the Dawgs this year to break the Deer streak. The program participation is up and the excitement is back for LP in year 3 of Coach Berneathy’s tenure. Big things are expected with this group.

Who you got?

Ha! Just started a thread. La Porte is in SETX coverage area. Is King Phillips still at DP? He was a very good WR.

LP looked very solid at scrimmage against Dobie. They return a lot—including entire backfield & most of OL. I think the D returns about 8 if I recall correctly.

Heard the Deer looked good at their scrimmage also.

Looks like Phillips graduated last year, is at A&M Kingsville now.  Didn't catch any of the varsity scrimmages this year, but did get dragged to the JV scrimmage vs Summer Creek, and was at Meet the Team this Saturday.  Sounds like it will be a good game either way, looking forward to it!

I'm going to throw something out and not trying to jinx them. I think LP is a state title contender this year.

Pretty early for that. I hope they incorporate a little more passing this year to minimize people stacking the box. I’d be happy with a few quick slants and RPO’s to the big TE over the LB’s a few times a game. Just some more higher pct. passes to back the D’s up a little and help create some creases.

They need something against the better teams. Lancaster shut them down with 9 within 5 yards of LOS, and they didn’t adapt well.

With no sustained drives in the 2nd half, the D finally wore down against Lancaster’s Power 5 RB, and he was able to break the game open for the 2 score win.
