I was thinking shortly after the polls closed on the west coast... before midnight, our time. By memory that's about the time that the media called it for Trump in '16.
They never have ALL of the votes counted, but recognize when one candidate has an insurmountable lead and then call that state (or whole race) for the winner. This one is going to be so close in the battlegrounds that I think they're going to count all of the votes before calling those states for either candidate. All that to say, I doubt we have a new president called as victorious this evening. I think the counting will go on for a day or so. The good news is that there's not a mountain of mail-in ballots like there were in 2020.
