spidersal Posted October 5 Report Posted October 5 Another good win for the Indians. Looks like it may be between PNG and Montgomery for the district title. Rez and Rob Corpus 2 Quote

1970 Posted October 5 Report Posted October 5 Good game both teams overall. I was really impressed by Huntsville DL #53. The refs overall have had a tough season so far, and I'm not talking about just this game, but all the games I've watched. I'm not throwing stones, I've never refereed a game, I'm just saying that there seems to be lots of confusion in the close games I've seen so far. But the clock issue tonight was simply ridiculous. Eazy Posted October 5 Report Posted October 5 Well it went to the wire as expected. Huntsville had their chances. A couple of turnovers and some critical penalties made a big difference in this one. Hornet offense very vanilla in the 1st half. Looked like they were just playing for a stalemate. Giving up the 10 before half was big. I figured they would open it up in the 2nd half and show something different. I think they only used the one RB all night #5. Only saw the other RB on the kickoff and he fumbled. #15 for PNG refused to be tackled. Offensive line opened up some holes. PNG didn’t turn it over and made fewer mistakes. What a finish with the FG off the upright. PNG probably glad to get to the cupcake part of the schedule now for the next 2 weeks. Rez, PN-G bamatex and Rob Corpus 3 Quote

It was a good game, and certainly one that could have gone the other way. Both teams are doing a few things right, and both have a lot to work on. As far as readiness for the playoffs, I’d say both teams are in the exact same place: We’re good, but we‘ll need to be better to go far. And, Huntsville probably has the prettiest high school stadium I’ve ever seen. Rob Corpus, TrojanWarrior08 and abPNUT 3 Quote

Sledge Posted October 6 Report Posted October 6 PNG was clearly the better team in the match up with Huntsville . PNG defense had Huntsville RB's number and Huntsville O was successful with a few limit plays . Chatagnier ran like a HS Larry Zonka . Shout out to PNG O line and entire D fence. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and "vibe" . I would like to compare stats because from what I saw Huntsville would not have been in the game if not for a fake punt and some random offense success with QB runs . However I totally agree with finding a way win statement. IMO finding a way to win is the mark of a true champion. Quote
Eazy Posted October 7 Report Posted October 7 It looked like Huntsville’s intent was to make this a 2nd half game. They didn’t show much in the 1st half which I think was by design. The game should have been 7-7 at the half, but the Hornets self destructed in the last 2 minutes of the half. The roughing the passer penalty took away the interception and PNG scored a TD. Then, the freshman RB fumbles the kickoff. The Huntsville defense stopped PNG out of FG range, but the LB decided to rip the helmet off the ball carrier, which setup the free FG. The 2nd half was indeed a different look on offense. Huntsville had some success and had a chance to win late as they made it to the red zone in a 3 point game. Then more mistakes. Two straight false starts (The band wasn’t even playing) and then a pass off the receivers hands into the PNG DB’s stomach for the Int. Still, the Hornets get the ball back again and the FG attempt for the tie hits the upright. So, yes, I guess it depends on your perspective. The Hornets know they could have won the game. PNG found a way to win, and Huntsville found a way to lose. Other than that, pretty even teams. And whatever PNG put in #15’s lunch pail on Friday, that was probably the difference in the game. There, now I can move on to next week. Rez and CS. 2 Quote

1970 Posted October 7 Report Posted October 7 When the roughing-the-passer flag was thrown I was thinking that it was going to be for defensive holding (of the receiver), and the young man calling the game for NDN Press thought so as well. That pass was 10 or 15 yards out in front of the receiver. Conner has missed some targets before but not by that margin. But anyway, the camera was on the action in the end zone so the passer and roughing or anything else at the LOS was not visible on camera. It was a good tough game, with a few mental mistakes, some blown coverage, screwy game clocks, some tough running and some outstanding play on both sides of the lines. PNG coaches got frustrated; that was the very first flag on a PNG coach that I can recall seeing in the past 5 or 6 years that I've been following the games, including the JV games. And I've never seen the likes of helmets coming off. One Huntsville defender got upset with himself and took off his helmet and threw it onto the ground right in front of the ref, who flagged him for an USC. Emotions were high. Also I hope the Huntsville kicker isn't down on himself, that was a good long kick, and when the ball hit the goal post the "twang" was very audible. Perhaps the extra umph from that distance cost a small bit of accuracy. Whatever, it was a good try. Huntsville will give Montgomery a good game. Quote

We would likely not have won if we didn’t get gifted an interception, a fumble on the kickoff, and a roughing the passer play that negated an interception. We’re at best as good as Huntsville. We had some really good plays and some really good luck. But, if your conclusion from this game is we’re significantly better than Huntsville, we didn’t watch the same game. The lesson I hope we take from this game is a profound dose of humility. We just need to play the game in front of us and keep working hard. There are teams out there more than good enough to punish us for our mistakes, and they won’t make the same mistakes Huntsville made. Quote

Anyone can create hypothetical situations to justify a position as you have demonstrated. Facts are that PNG consistently moved to ball in all four quarters despite Huntsville efforts to rotate fresh D linemen in to stop the run. PNG offense had more 3rd down conversions, had more red zone penetrations and basically controlled more of the clock. Huntsville is a legit team had some great plays that kept them in the game including a fake punt that caught PNG off guard and the lone touch down pass in the first half however IMO the Best Team Won. Ca. 1968 or '69, I was on the sideline and said something about the other team's luck after they covered our fumble, and Coach Mo O'Brien very quickly spun around to face me and said, "you make your own luck, son". (If you're of PNG lineage then you likely know who Coach O'Brien was.) Anyway, since everyone has their own opinions, then I have mine also, and when the first half ended I said out loud that PNG should win this going away, regardless of the outstanding play of Huntsville's D line. In the 2nd half, PNG appeared almost intent to give the game away, (with the help of the refs), but they won it anyway. This is my last comment on this one. I hope that Huntsville will bounce right back against Montgomery and MLC. Rez 1 Quote
