Cougar14.2 Posted October 21 Report Posted October 21 It's been a while since there was reason to to start a thread involving a Crosby game outside of complaining about the coaching. With both teams 4-3 on the season but coming into the game 4-0 in district play this one might be worth discussing. Teams are 1-1 since they've been in the district together with each team winning their home contest(La Porte's home game was at BH). This game will likely determine who gets to avoid a first round matchup with state ranked #6 College Station and a probably early exit. The loser of this game will still have an opportunity to finish in 2nd place and even win a share of the district championship with La Porte playing an undefeated Angleton next week and Crosby playing Angleton the week after. The district could very well end up in a three way tie for first place with Angleton, Crosby and La Porte all finishing 6-1 in district play. Fun few weeks to finish the season in 11-5A-D1 As far as the game goes it feels like a great matchup for this year's version of Crosby. La Porte's offense is run heavy and the strength of Crosby's defense is their front seven. Crosby has run the ball extremely well since district play has started, albeit against lower level competition, and based on what La Porte has shown on film personnel wise it looks like we should have continued success in that department. I think the key to the game from Crosby is getting La Porte in 3rd and 5+ situations where we can pick up stops on the run plays they'll try and some defended passes that will force punts in a potential lower scoring field position game. Crosby will also need to clean up some of the penalties and ball-handling from prior weeks if we want to give ourselves the best chance to win. Justafan72, AggiesAreWe and Rez 3 Quote
Eazy Posted October 21 Report Posted October 21 Both teams started 0-3, but now 4-0 in District. I gotta go La Porte by 10. But Crosby might surprise. VPfan2017 1 Quote
purple reign Posted October 21 Report Posted October 21 With Angleton playing on Thursday against Kempner, their coaches will have the opportunity to attend this game on Friday and scout both of their remaining opponents at one time. How convenient! Quote
CCRed Posted October 22 Report Posted October 22 Is Laporte’s new stadium complete, or where is this game being played ? Quote

OlDawg Posted October 22 Report Posted October 22 As LP finishes up with Pasadena, this game—and the next vs Angleton—will determine PO seeding. I like LP’s O in this one. But, they’ll need to protect the football, and minimize penalties. The unsung weapon for LP has been Special Teams. Again, I like LP in that. Crosby has one main weapon—and he’s a good one. La Porte has four interchangeable RB’s they can trot in fresh at any time, and a QB who is starting to round into form as the staff has found the best way to use him. Underestimating LP’s passing attack has been a big mistake for previous opponents. LP is actually about 70/30 run/pass this year, and has shown the ability to move the ball consistently with the passing attack when the run is shut down. Although, the run has yet to be shut down by anyone this year. LP has gained over 200 yards rushing in every game this year. I’ve only seen Crosby once this year. They looked very solid to me as they seem to have finally grown into the new scheme. Defensively, they’ve looked solid—although the competition is not as strong as LP’s to this point. I think they’ll be the best D LP has faced since Kingwood. I think this will be a one score game—with the slight edge to LP’s O if both teams play to their recent norms. Should be a good one. Even better if both teams come away injury free. A little surprised this wasn’t a Pick ‘Em this week. It could be a very good ‘separator’ game. On paper, it could easily be a toss-up. Quote

Cougtalk Posted October 23 Report Posted October 23 Mirroring OlDawg and 14,3. Crosby's defense has been very good this season, they turn over passing teams and tend to be pretty good in the trenches. Mr. 0 will be all over the field in this one and this is an opportunity for him to show all those other colleges what they are missing out on. 2 will do what 2 does and this game likely gets determined in the trenches. I want to see what the coaching staff does in this one, we know LP is very consistent and they are what they are and do not deviate they have an excellent team culture and understanding of exactly who they are and how their systems work. Continuity and years of practice make that the case. The depth question is a big one, as four different running backs will see the field for LP and how good Crosby's 2nd team of dlinemen is may be a deciding factor if Crosby is equally able to rotate and not lose a lot. I have been pleasantly surprised with the Cougars last three games but that does not mean we are at LP's level this year, maybe we are, maybe we aren't but schemes, coaching, and playcalling are going to have a big effect. Not sure Crosby can win this one if we don't establish a passing game, but we've been doing just enough passing in the last four to make our offense work. Also this is game is going to be done an hour before everyone else with the amount of running that's going to happen from both sides. Crosby in a squeaker by a score. Quote
VPfan2017 Posted October 23 Report Posted October 23 Ima say laporte in this one. Think that slot t style offense laporte runs (if u wanna call it that?) will give crosby fits. I think this game will be decided by how many possessions crosby gets. If laporte gets 3/4 yards a play and just grinds it out then laporte wins. Gonna say 35-21 laporte with a late score to seal it, with crosby not getting many chances on Offense to put up points just due to laporte chewing clock Quote

Better make each possession count, should be a good game. Is Laporte still streaming the “home” games on youtube this year or no? Quote

Cougar14.2 Posted October 25 Author Report Posted October 25 The more I look at the matchup the better I feel about Crosby's chances if both teams play their best game. Against three common district opponents Crosby has a slightly larger average margin of victory at 31ppg vs La Porte's 28.3. I don't think La Porte will be able to throw Crosby out of loading the box. LP's offense doesn't look the same without the threat of Kay on the outside. If this game is played in the box like most expect it to be I think Crosby has a more than marginal advantage with the Windfont boys and the North Shore transfer Keenan Bradley finally turning into what we thought he would be when he enrolled. Not to mention Josiah Jones on the back end playing safety at a Pickney/Perry/Kirkwood level. What worries me is our schizophrenic offense. My assumption is that O'Fleherty and Johnson are going to have success leaning on La Porte's d-line but there will be times that Robinson/Wheeler are going to have to make plays from the QB position and neither has show the ability to consistently do so yet. I think there may be some mitigation since LP doesn't really rush the passer outside of blitzing #1 off the edge but Crosby is still going to need to show some competency throwing the ball. All the games I remember Crosby playing in Deer Park have been playoff games but if memory serves me correctly we've never won in Abshier stadium. Would be nice to change that tonight. Quote

This one didn’t ripen well. To be fair, you weren’t aware this was the first game since the Border Battle — Game 1 —that LP wasn’t missing at least 3 starters on D & 2 on O. Tonight, they were only missing one SR OL. Quote
