purple reign
These teams are the last remaining undefeated in district 11-5A1 and should be a great game. They haven't played each other since the late 90's, but the head coaches know each other well. Brittain at Angleton and Berneathy at La Porte were the DC and OC for Angleton in 2017 when Angleton reached the semifinals while in region 4 and lost that game to Manvel which mostly stifled their wing-T offense in a 35-10 loss. Both coaches graduated high school in 2002, Brittain was the leading tackler for a Sinton team that played in the state finals and Berneathy was a lineman for Galveston Ball. An odd twist is that the OC who Berneathy replaced in 2015, Stephen Dorr, replaced him when Berneathy left in 2018 to be a head coach at Dobie. I guess Dorr decided there is no place like Angleton. I know they were glad to have him back as he does a nice job. Both Brittain and Berneathy celebrated their 50th victory as HC 2 weeks ago on the same weekend. Angleton dropped the wing-T after the '19 season, then ran the spread for 4 years and now runs a multiple offense. They run from 1,2 and 3-back sets. The 3-back formation which looked strange to me the first time I saw it is the T formation, the oldest formation in football so a source tells me. Like the wing-T, the backs line up in a 3-point stance. They are right behind the QB who takes a direct snap. It's mostly a running formation, but Angleton does pass out of it. At other times they line up in the shotgun and I have seen them in the I-formation at other times. Angleton's QB, Bryce Duron, has been very good. He played WR on varsity his freshman and sophomore season and they decided to switch him to QB this season after he played a few plays at QB last year. Being an ex WR, he can run like the wind when needed, He was such a good WR that I hated to see him leave that position, but it has worked out. This game will be streamed on NFHS, KF89 and OlDawg

Remember also, Berneathy was at La Porte prior to Angleton when LP was making their runs to the Regional Finals in 6A. Should be a good game. It will be the first game Angleton has actually played against a team with a winning record all year. La Porte is also basically back to full strength—I believe—which they haven’t been since the Border Battle vs. Deer Park in the first preseason game. OlDawg
La Porte will bring the ‘Four Horsemen’ (Barnes, Sandolph, Bright, and Simon) against a defense that’s very familiar with how to defend their offense. It should be a good test to see how LP can fare against others who attempt to stuff the running game. Crosby was supposed to have a solid defense, tried their best to stop LP’s running game, and it was over early to the tune of 52-6. The Dawgs have scored at least 20 points, and rushed for over 220 yards in every game this year—even with all the injuries—and against 6A PO teams and PNG. LP’s defense has been susceptible to the big play in the passing game & Angleton may be able to take advantage of that weakness. It could be the key to the game if LP can’t get pressure. Sure tackling will also be critical. Angleton’s QB can’t be allowed to escape containment when LP does collapse the pocket. TO’s & penalties will be magnified. Special Teams play will be magnified. LP doesn’t need to get cute. Just play to their strength. Pound the Angleton D early and often, and rely on their depth to wear down the Wildcat D. Calpreps has it as a toss-up. I hope both teams come out of it injury free where they’re not affected for the PO’s as they should finish 1 and 2 unless Crosby pulls an upset of Angleton in a possible trap game and Pasadena has a major miracle against La Porte. purple reign
This game will be the second time Angleton has faced a wing-T this year, not in a game but in their 1st scrimmage. Unfortunately the opponent in that scrimmage, Cy Park is terrible, currently winless. That doesn't mean it was worthless. I'm sure they got some instruction then about how to stop the wing-T that they could build upon this week although the opponent will be far better.
