2001 - John Hoffman dies in Seattle, WA at age 58. The lefthanded-hitting catcher gets into eight games with Houston (1964,1965), getting three hits and one RBI in 21 at bats.

1974 - Nathan Bland is born in Birmingham, AL. The lefty reliever sports a 1-2 record in 22 appearances during the 2003 season.

1952 - Craig Reynolds is born in Houston, TX. The shortstop would bat .252 with 32 homers and 300 RBIs during his eleven years as an Astro (1979-1989) while offering a steady glove.

1930 - Norm Larker is born in Beaver Meadows, PA. Nicknamed "Dumbo" for his big ears, the fiery first baseman hits .263 with nine homers during Houston's inaugural season.
