Why not Austin?  The University of Texas has been and is the home of several other state championship activities..

It is the state's capital..

Given the choice of indoors or outdoors, a vast majority of the coaches will go with indoors.

I am so glad basketball left that God awful place.

Oh I get it.. but, don't most (if not all) high school football teams play outdoor every week all year?  And just to be clear... I personally like them playing at Cowboy's stadium because it's the nicest venue in the state.  I just mean to all of the, "Needs to be Dallas! .. Needs to be Houston!" crowd... why wouldn't the state just say, "Ok.. fine then.  It's Austin."

Yes they do but nobody wants weather to be a factor in the championship game.

Besides, usually Sept-Oct. is much nicer temp than mid Dec.

And I get that too.  But there's no guarantee that weather won't factor in the week or two before the state championship game for some schools.  Especially for the extreme North teams.  I'm sure outside weather in Austin Tx in December is like a walk on the beach for Canadian High School compared to up there.

I'm an "Ice Bowl" type fan.. weather is just part of it.  But I still like it at Cowboys stadium.. nothing to do with inside/outside.  But because it's the nicest field in the state.

Most in this discussion are missing the point, the TXHSFB State Championships have become a major event. It is now a weekend long celebration of the entire season and can never again move to venues that cannot support it to be held in the same manor it is held now. That means, whatever stadium holds it must have at least 4 locker rooms, ample seating to absorb fans watching the game playing as well as the fans filing in for the next game scheduled and must have adequate parking and hotels nearby to hold fans and teams. From what I understand, the only other venue in the state that can manage that is the Alamodome, which is an aging and antiquated place. It ain't moving!!

NRG Stadium has all of that. Five football dressing rooms and plenty of seating. Dallas fans did not travel last time to Houston and there were some new schools involved as well. I personally can't stand the seating at AT&T. Things are very disconnected compared to walking around a concourse that circles the main seating bowl like many stadiums. Not to mention the giant screen is so distracting to the point that it's hard not to watch the game the entire time on it. It's definitely got the "wow factor" when walking in, but I'm there to watch a game.

I've heard the stories of how NRG wasn't accommodating, but as someone that has covered multiple state championships in Arlington and traveled to them as a fan, it would be nice to catch games closer to home.  It would also be nice to see the Dallas teams not playing in their own backyard year after year.

I truly don’t have a preference either way..I always kinda back in the day, thought the THSCA and the UIL would, if they went to a single site for the state championships, they would tie them in with the rotation of coaching school. Houston, San Antonio, and Fort Worth.  The single site is good cause you can see all the games at once, but the travel to centrally located sites was cool too. Once, with two co workers, on the same day we saw  a morning state championship in the dome, an afternoon game at Kyle field, and a night game in Waco… was a lot younger in those days … lol

Me too. I like a 4 year rotation. Houston and Dallas for sure but what about the other two? I like outdoor games because it's football not basketball and weather is usually a factor in one way or another.. an equalizer if you will.

Houston, Dallas, Austin and Lubbock is what I like.

Dallas didn’t travel because their big schools didn’t make it.   6A was NS & Katy vs Austin schools.  Lake Ridge and Frisco Lone Star made it in 5a, but they were new schools at the time with no following.   I don’t think the attendance would have been great in JerryWorld with that lineup.
