La Porte Coach Berneathy got his first THSFB coaching job at La Porte in 2007 when he was hired by LP coach Jeff LaReau as the OL coach. He stayed at LP through the 2012 season, and then he went to LaMarque to be the OC and was very successful. Then, he went to Dickinson—also as OC—and Dickinson had some good offensive teams.

He left Dickinson and took the OC job at Angleton. As OC, he helped lead Angleton to the 2017 Semis.

He left Angleton to become the HC & Coordinator at Dobie, turned the program around, and led them to a 33-10 record with a DC during his time.

He had the opportunity to return to his first TXHSFB coaching roots at La Porte, took it in 2022, and has 2 DC’s from two different districts, and 3 PO wins so far advancing to this State Quarterfinal in his 3rd full year.

What’s more impressive is that the 2 DC’s are without playing a true home game in those 2 years as the new stadium is being built. Truly an accomplishment for the young men, their supportive families, the coaching staff, and the administration via their support of the program.

He’s brought LP football back to the condition & tradition it had for decades until a couple of hires set the program back. He’s been rewarded with great appreciation from the players, parents, fans & community. He’s also getting something coaches dream of…

A brand new, top-of-the line stadium, training field & weight rooms.

We’re glad he’s back!

Always tough to beat a team twice in one season. But I've seen it the past few seasons. As long as LP continues to stick to what's got them this far. The sky is the limit as to har far they can go. We’re at the point of the season where the cream begins rising to the top.

I remember Matt saying it was all screwed up. BG brought it up and mentioned they had LP ranked 15 in state, but 5th in district in the print edition. The print edition looked like they listed district teams in alphabetical order, omitted Angleton, and never proofed.

I get the feeling there’s a big push for viewership/digital offerings/game projections, and some of the investigative detail that used to make them special is slipping through the cracks.

Not a slam. Maybe just trying to do too much too quick.

I have been buying the mag for over 50 years and still have them all, but never saw this happen before. I guess instead of the magazine being the main thing like in the past, the "digital subscription" is now. I think most people just want the magazine and don't want the subscription. Why should I pay for recruiting news when I can get it free. And I have no need for "7 on 7" news as that is not real football. If it was, it would have blocking and tackling. I can even find predictions for free. And the magazine hits the stands if at all very late now. You use to be able to get it in early July. This year I kept looking for it and finally found it about mid August at Walgreens after practices had been going on for awhile. As far as I know that was the only outlet in Angleton that ever had it. I never saw it at Walmart or any of the other usual places.

Never bought it in my 60+ years. Used to attend games weekly with my wife, old classmates, & friends met in HS football forums up until about 5 years ago. We would travel around to see games together. Got my info direct viewership & convos during games & pregame meals. We used to have a great time (I think anyway).

Since my wife has become unable to care for herself, I try to keep up via this forum & broadcast games. So, I’m very appreciative of games being streamed at least. She still enjoys watching with me as well. Hopefully, with LP’s new stadium, we’ll be able to attend games again. I’ll push her wherever & however to get her to ‘date night’ at DQ & the new handicap seating area it’s supposed to have.

Nothing against DCTF. Just always preferred to see for myself. As far as history, I try to keep up as best I can, and remember as I can from memory. What I have left. 😊

I miss those days going to the best games in the area every weekend. We ate a lot of good food and had a lot of good fellowship. And our convos weren't always about football rather life. Covid and life kind of put a stop to a lot of that.

Congrats to La Porte and Angleton on cleaning out the region. Both team drew good stylistic matchups in the regional semis and took advantage of them. Angleton looked like they improved their passing game against College Station but I would probably still lean La Porte by a score. I think I would favor either of these teams over Smithson Valley but I think La Porte would have the best chance against Aledo in the title game.

Sean Simon (La Porte Fr. RB #21) now has 2 offers. Texas Tech offered first. Now, Tennessee has offered.

Wife—an Aggie—keeps saying ATM better get on the ball. 😂

LP will be graduating quite a bit. Including a lot of the OL. The real stars of LP aren’t just the RB’s. To me, it’s the OL. They’re just road grading folks. Only thing missing is the paint stripes.

He’ll have a little tougher road, and have to use his personal talent more, without this year’s OL.

Still, he’s the best I’ve seen in decades, and I’ve seen a lot of football.

I noticed last night on LSU recruiting pages, they’ve taken notice already also. No offer yet though that I’m aware of…

Also, don’t want to forget about Barnes. He has over 1500 yards & over 20 TD’s as well. Hopefully, he’s getting some looks. From what I understand, he’s been a great team leader.

Sometimes, that’s the best thing about having a highly recruited prospect. Others—even opponent players—get more looks because of the interest.

Hopefully, they can continue on where young men in this class can get even more notice. After these last 2 years, and what they’ve gone through, they’ve earned the looks. They’re gonna need to play their best game though. LP is 0-4 in State Quarterfinal games, and Angleton is a solid club.

They need to get over this hump.

Angleton has made it to the semis 3 times that I know of. The 1st time was in 1958 when they played for the state championship and lost to Stamford in 2A. I have no recollection of that as I was living in San Antonio with my parents and had never heard of Angleton. The second time was in 1973 when they played Austin Travis in 4A which was then the top classification and lost to them by 2 points and barely missed out on a chance to play against the legendary Earl Campbell and his Tyler Lions for the state title. Then in 2017 in Coach Roark's last year before retiring as the Region 4 champion they lost to Manvel by a score of 35-10. There have been a couple of years that they also just missed being Regional champs ,2011 when they lost to Pearland Dawson 27-23 in regional finals and 2015 when they lost to Ridge Point 36-35 in overtime when they scored a TD and decided to go for 2 and didn't make it. The odd thing about that game is it was held in San Antonio's Alamo Dome because there was a threat of freezing wet weather in the forecast and I guess they could not get NRG.

I'm taking LP by 21. I think Angleton runs into the other side of the coin this time but that offense from LP looks darn near unstoppable think they play Aledo. That being said Angleton has turned it on since the Crosby game.

NRG had a period there where they weren't hosting because they were the UIL State Championship site while Jerry World was being built.

Just think if he followed ‘Big Mo’ Maurice Morris (LP alum from 2013) and went to the Naval Academy. Talk about an education, and his talent in that offense. Wow!

Incidentally, I think Mo is working in Pearland now. He served for 9 years, and I saw somewhere where he was like a Project Manager for a lighting technology firm in Pearland area.

As a Navy vet, wouldn’t bother me a bit either.

LP’s actually had a few go to the Service Academies. Kendzior (DE that terrorized NS & PAM & others a few years back) went to the Air Force Academy.

LP has been the smallest school in the big school division for all but the last few years. When they went against Stratford, it was ‘78 & the C. James years. More recently, it was the Katy machine of the mid 2000’s when Katy was basically 6A-D1, but able to play D2 because of 19-5A enrollments. Also, before all the talent was being spread around KISD.

By the time LP got to the State Quarterfinals, opponent program sizes & attrition made it nearly impossible in Region 3 even though LP punched way above their weight class. La Porte was basically 5A going against the big boys.

The exception was 2011 and PAM. But, if you’d seen the LP/Katy game that year, both teams left pretty beat up.

Coach Berneathy was the OL coach for LP then.

Nobody at LP terrorized North Shore! 🤣🤣

Some information about attending the game:

Angleton will be the home team so will be on the west side of NRG. Parking will be $22 + tax (about $23.81?)  Presale tickets are $15 plus an added fee) Tickets bought at the gate will be $20 (no fee). Go wildcats!

Being unfamiliar with both teams, I discounted both of yall. Figured yall would lose to Pflugerville Weiss (terrible letdown), Lufkin (talked a good game), or one of the Brazos teams. But now, having watched some playoff games, I appreciate the physicality that both of yalls teams have played with. Yall both have certainly earned it. My hats off to ya. I would say I'm cheering for La Porte because orange and black are close to my heart but I'm just hoping for a great game to watch. May the best team win! Good luck and save travels. Hopefully we can get a game in two weeks.

La Porte's colors have always been orange and white. You should be for Angleton since we start with A and we're both Cats! I would love to see Angleton play Aledo although I probably wouldn't like the result. Aledo is on a different level than everybody else.
