Orangefield 64,

Liberty 51

The Bobcats (13-4) got off to a very slow start against the Panthers (6-5) and used a strong fourth period to pull away to win 64-51.

Orangefield led just 38-35 heading into the fourth before outscoring Liberty 26-16 in the game’s final eight minutes.

Zach Hayes led the way for the Bobcats with 18 points to go with six rebounds while Jeremy Granger added 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

The Bobcats appeared sluggish in the first half allowing the Panthers to collect rebound after rebound as Orangefield also turned the ball over nine times in the first two periods.

“We gave them nine turnovers and about 11 offensive rebounds, that is 20 extra shots,†Orangefield Coach Rea Wrinkle said. “We have to start blocking out. Rebounding is all about effort and we just were not giving it.â€

The Bobcats outscored the Panthers 41-30 while ending up with a 28-21 rebounding advantage in the contest.

Jeremiah Brown had 12 points for the Panthers while Edwin Hardy added 17 points in the loss.

Tyler Angelle put in seven points for the Bobcats while Jared Helton and Devin Green each finished with six points.

Vidor 50,

Bridge City 43

The Pirates trailed by a point heading into the final eight minutes and were able to outscore the host Cardinals 14-6 in the fourth to take a 50-43 win and head into the championship game.

Bridge City (6-9) could not protect the basketball in the fourth and found buckets were hard to come by as the Cardinals went ice cold from the field.

Vidor (6-11) got a game-high 17 points and also a game-high 12 rebounds from Chad Sims while Joby Riggs added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Scott Howard finished with 11 points and Jared Williamson added nine for Vidor.

Bridge City was led by Jason Clark’s 13 points while Tyler Hyde added 12 in the loss. Adam Sanchez finished the game with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Cardinals opened up a 14-11 margin after the first period and the two teams went into halftime time at 22.

Bridge City was then able to lead 37-36 heading into the fourth when Vidor took control.

Vidor earlier in the day was a 69-31 winner over Shepherd.

Orangefield 54,

Buna 31

The Bobcats stormed out to an early 15-6 lead on the Buna Cougars early on Thursday and never looked back.

Jeremy Granger finished with 15 points and eight rebounds in the 54-31 win while Zach Hayes added 16 points in the victory.

Both teams scored 13 points in the second as Orangfield took a 28-19 lead into halftime.

The Bobcats then were up 39-26 after three before outscoring the Cougars 15-5 in the game’s final eight minutes.

Casey Sparks put in eight points and eight rebounds for the Bobcats.

OF defense lifts ’Cats over Vidor, 56-40

The Orange Leader

BRIDGE CITY — The Orangefield Bobcats played exactly how Coach Rea Wrinkle expected them to play in the second half Friday and it led to the championship of the Bridge City Holiday Classic.

While the Bobcats were winning the tournament, the Vidor Pirates were forced to settle for second and the Bridge City Cardinals took home third place.

Orangefield 56,

Vidor 40

The Bobcats took home the championship Friday after not allowing the Pirates a bucket in the second half until there was 6:14 left in the fourth period.

The tough defense allowed Orangefield to come away with a 56-40 victory as senior Jeremy Granger was named the tournament’s MVP after scoring 11 points and snaring 12 rebounds in the final game.

Vidor was unable to score at all in the second half until 1:38 remained in the third period as Scott Howard nailed home two free throws.

“One of the things I emphasized at halftime was to pick up our defensive intensity,†Wrinkle said. “That (Jared) Williamson was killing us in the lane. To only let them have one shot, and it was free throws, in the third is a great thing. I was very happy with our defense the entire game. We keep doing that and we will be able to do some good things this year.â€

Orangefield opened the game up on a flurry as the Bobcats raced out to a 17-9 advantage after the first period.

Zach Hayes, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, had six points in the frame while Devin Green, who finished the game with 10 points, added four.

Scott Howard had seven of the Pirates’ nine points in the first period.

Vidor then outscored Orangefield 14-11 in the second while the Bobcats led 28-23 going into the break.

Chad Sims, who was an All-Tournament Team selection for Vidor, had seven points in the second to key a rally as the Pirates tried to chip away at the Orangefield lead.

The game’s pivotal frame was certainly the third as Orangefield’s defense kept the Pirates away from the basket.

The defense was much needed as the Bobcats could only muster up 10 points in the third.

Both teams got hot in the fourth as Orangefield led 38-25 heading into the game’s final eight minutes.

The Bobcats went 10-for-16 from the free throw line in the fourth with Ryan Granger even getting in on the action with two technical free throws. Granger has been out of action since early in the football season with a torn ACL.

Jared Williamson, who was also an All-Tournament selection for the Pirates, scored 11 points for Vidor.

Orangefield’s Jared Helton was named to the team and scored seven points to go with four rebounds.

The Bobcats out-rebounded the Pirates 30-23.
