Let's somehow get this Lufkin thread back on topic.

Tell me what you know about Danny Cowgill as a Defensive Coordinator?  How did things go for him at Barbers Hill under Westerberg and over at Tomball Memorial these past 4 years?

Honest opinions.

Interesting that when Abseck was hired at BH, Cowgill went to TM, now Abseck has hired him at the new DC at Lufkin.

Good Coach. The defensive coaching room became extremely toxic at BH. He got out. Good hire for LP

Toxic?? That may need a clearer explaination. Doesn't sound good. I mean, Abseck came in right behind Westerberg. So he would have known Cowgill.

Spoke to OC Matt Kuykendall last evening. Like what I heard, don't think I've ever spoke to a high school OC with the his vision.  Sounds more like a college OC to me with some of the things he discussed.  There is not a single negative so far that I personally can see and I've been around a long time.  Your thoughts on his work at BH?

The program building is happening quick. Example, there were only 55 kids moving to the freshman team next year before Abseck was hired, now they have 100 committed to play next year and they are already working an off season.

New strength and conditioning coach for MS through Varsity. Several stadium and indoor practice facility improvements already done or planned to happen after graduation.

The communications between the coaching staff and player parents will be upfront and personal. Not seen around here in almost 20 years.

Bigger booster club involvement with player parents, things are moving very quickly, no grass growing under Abseck's feet.

Not a BH person, but I always thought BH was pretty well prepared when they played La Porte. Just wasn't a good matchup for them against a very physical, smash mouth team. They seemed to do really well against more finesse type teams. They always had a pretty balanced attack. I liked it for their style of play. I don't think there's a team currently in 9-5A that plays a style matchup that will give Lufkin unusual problems with the style game that's called.

I'd go Lufkin, PAM, BH--in that order--with 4th a toss-up at this early stage.

Good point about physicality. Not sure how physical minded Danny Cowgill will be on defense, don't know a single thing about him. He is still employed at Tomball Memorial, having a slight issue getting out of his contract there.  He has been coming in here when he can get time off.  We will need to see where this all goes in the next couple years.  Lufkin could use some physicality, the exception was our D the last couple of years, very tough group.

We have been physically knocked around by Longview or teams like them for most of the years under Coach Todd Quick, the exception was last year. In fact Quick was 2-14 against Longview over his 13 years as Lufkin HC, that's telling you everything you need to know about why Lufkin was not a top football program during Quick's tenure.

After 30 years of pretty much the same mind set, this is all new ground for the Lufkin community.

In a district with this many new staffs, after the top 2, it's really all a guessing game to me. This district is kind of wide open. I'm giving BH the benefit of the doubt because of the young talent I saw in the PO game last year. But, it may even be rough for them in the beginning. Should be interesting.

If WB keeps the freshman group together they will be a factor

One thing about 9-5A. Whoever makes the PO’s gets a pretty much free ride to the Area Rd. Has to be the easiest first round matchup besides Pasadena schools in the Region.

It's hard to expect WB to do anything with Chuckie Langston at the helm.

WB has to best Sophs in the area one on defense and one offense.  WB will make the playoffs.

Langston didn't have the players to compete in 6a, you have a new breed of parents who duck that district and sent their kids to smaller classification.  Now that WB is in 5a all of sudden parents are keeping the kids at the school.

If WB goes back to 6a watch how many  transfers come back.

With those freshmen they will compete in 5A or 6A.

Don't sleep on the 27 class.  They have 3 d1 players, the Qb has 3 d1 offers, TCU,TECH,SacSt.  The DE has two d1 offers already.

I think WB finishes 3rd at least next season.

When the freshman are Jr's watch out.
