Lamar women take on Lady Cougars in Non-conference finale

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team closes out their non-conference schedule on Wednesday night, taking on the University of Houston a 7:00 at Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Lady Cardinals enter the game with a 7-5 record, on the heels of a 67-64 win over Lafayette at the Battle at the Border Tournament in Edinburg, Texas.

Lamar is led in scoring by freshman Tamara Abalde, who is averaging 15.6 points per game along with 6.5 rebounds per game, while sophomore Brittney Williams is averaging 11.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Junior Nikki Williams is averaging 11.5 points per game and has a team-high 30 steals while senior Aida Bakhos leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game.

As a team the Lady Cardinals are shooting .372 from the field and have out scored their opponents 62.6 to 62.4. Lamar has also controlled the boards this season, out rebounding their opponents 39.2 to 38.0. Houston enters the game with a 5-8 record, having won three of their last five games. They dropped their last game at home to Duke 84-68, but had picked up wins over Texas Tech and Miami on the road and a home win over TCU.

The Lady Cougars are led in scoring by Tye Jackson and Twiggy McIntyre who are averaging 12.7 and 12.6 points per game respectively. Courtney Taylor leads UH in rebounding, pulling down 7.1 boards per game.

Houston is averaging 66.3 points per game and giving up 69.7 points per contest while out rebounding their opponents 43.2 to 41.9 this season. The Lady Coogs have posted a team shooting percentage of .366, while allowing their opponents to shoot .382 from the field. 

After Wednesday's game the Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Saturday January, 12 when they travel to San Antonio for the beginning of Southland Conference play at UTSA at 2 p.m.
