Mustangs hold off Cards, 47-37

WEST ORANGE — Using a stingy defense and a hot fourth quarter, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs nabbed their first District 21-3A win of the season by downing the Bridge City Cardinals 47-37 at Mustang Gym Friday night.

It was a defensive slugfest throughout and the Cardinals (9-11, 2-3) bounced back from a 22-16 halftime deficit to grab a 32-31 edge heading into the fourth.

The Mustangs (6-16, 1-4) picked up the pace in the fourth and forced the Cardinals into 10 of their 29 turnovers. The Mustangs finished with a 16-5 tear in the last eight minutes, holding the Cardinals without a field goal in the final period.

Senior Ronnie Dennis led the Mustang arsenal, tallying 13 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Guard Marquest Watson pumped out 12 points and snagged five rebounds. Donovan Crochett contributed eight points and six boards while Donald Brown played well off the bench, collecting five points and yanking down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Guard Jason Clark paced the Cardinals, scoring 12 points while adding six rebounds. Post Corey Smith tallied seven points and grabbed nine rebounds. Adam Sanchez contributed seven points and six rebounds while Jaden Dillon paced the Cardinals with 10 rebounds.

The Mustangs darted out to a 14-9 edge at the end of the first period with Watson pouring in six points and Dennis four. The two squads duked it out on the defensive end in the second period as WO-S won that quarter just 8-7.

The Cardinals returned with a flurry in the third period, limiting the Mustangs to just nine points while scoring 16 of their own. Clark led the rally by ripping off nine points of his own in the third.

However, the Mustang defensive pressure was too much for the Cardinals to handle down the stretch run. Brown and Crochett controlled the glass for the Mustangs while point guard Darius Rubin, Dennis and post Jim McDonald continued to force turnover after Cardinal turnover. Crochett and Dennis each hit a couple field goals apiece to ignite the 16-point Mustang period.

The Mustangs finished with a 42-36 rebounding edge.

WO-S finished with 13 turnovers.

Bridge City converted just 15-of-29 free throws while the Mustangs went 11-of-22 from the charity stripe.

WO-S will look for its second straight 21-3A win when they play host to Hamshire-Fannett (1-19, 0-5) Tuesday while the Cardinals look to rebound against third-ranked Hardin-Jefferson (23-3, 5-0).
