Guest abovetherim Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 Lamar looks to remain perfect in SLC play Jan. 16, 2008 BEAUMONT - Playing at the Montagne Center for the first time since early December, the Lamar University women's basketball team hits the floor Thursday in a Southland Conference tilt with the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks at 7 p.m. The Ladyjacks hold a 40-3 (.930) advantage in the all-time series against Lamar. SFA had won 39-straight contests against the Lady Cardinals, until LU rallied for an 81-71 decision in Nacogdoches last season. The Ladyjacks however got their revenge with a 73-65 victory in the first round of the SLC Tournament at the Campbell Center in Houston. In their last meeting at the Montagne Center SFA posted an 80-58 win during the 2005-06 season. The Lady Cardinals enter the game with a 8-6 record, on the heels of a 75-74 win at UTSA on Saturday afternoon in the SLC opener for both teams. Lamar is led in scoring by freshman Tamara Abalde, who is averaging 16.4 points per game along with 6.9 rebounds per game, while junior Nikki Williams is averaging 13.1 points per game and has a team-high 50 assists and 31 steals. Sophomore Brittney Williams is averaging 12.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game and senior Aida Bakhos leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game. As a team the Lady Cardinals are shooting .384 from the field and are averaging 64.4 points per game while allowing 64.6 points per game. Lamar has controlled the boards this season, out rebounding their opponents 39.0 to 37.6. Stephen F. Austin enters the game with a 5-9 season record, but is coming off back-to-back wins to open SLC play against Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State. The Ladyjacks are led by senior guard Nikki Carr who is averaging team high's with 13.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game, while Jordan Ford is averaging 10.0 points per game. Antionette Davis has also been solid on the glass for SFA, averaging 6.3 rebounds per game. As a team the Ladyjacks are averaging 62.9 points per game, while allowing their opponents 65.8 points per contest. They are shooting .355 from the field, while their opponents are connecting on .401 of their shots After Thursday night's game against SFA the Lady Cardinals will hit the road for a Saturday afternoon showdown against the Sam Houston State Bearkats at Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville, Texas at 3:00.
