Dugat plays big part in Baylor revival

Baylor University spent the first part of the 2007-08 campaign beating up on non-conference teams. Now it’s the Big 12’s turn.

Henry Dugat, a Baylor University guard and Dayton grad, scored in double figures in the Bears’ first two Big 12 games.

In Tuesday night’s contest against Oklahoma State, Dugat poured in a team-leading 23 points, that included three 3-pointers. He also had five rebounds, a team-high four steals and two assists.

“Henry played with a great deal of energy, not only on the offensive end, but he was also doing it on the defensive end,” said Baylor coach Scott Drew. “As a coach, that’s when you have got something really going. Henry gave it to us on both ends tonight.”

In Baylor’s Big 12 opener last Saturday, Dugat scored 15 points, pulled down nine rebounds, dished out three assists and made two steals to help overcome Iowa State 74-67.

He led Baylor in points, rebounds and assists, again hitting three treys.

Baylor is 14-2 overall.

“We came out focused in the second half,” Dugat said of the Iowa State contest. “We used the pressure to take them out of what they wanted to do and make them do what we wanted them to do, which was turn the ball over. At halftime, coach told us that we were not getting after them like we usually do on defense.”

University Alumni Open indoor track meet.

The Wayne State University junior won the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 39.84 seconds. He was also a member of the winning distance medley relay team, which finished in 11:03.11.

• Texas State-San Marcos got two-double digit performances from Corey Jefferson this week. The Lee College alum scored a team-high 18 points as the Bobcats lost a 95-48 battle to Northwestern State University. Jefferson, who hit 7 of 9 from the field, struck three times from beyond the arc. He also had a team-high four steals. In a 78-72 win over Central Arkansas, Jefferson finished with 12 points and four rebounds. The Bobcats are 8-7 overall and 1-1 in the Southland Conference.

• Barbers Hill grad Josh Camp placed sixth in the triple jump at the University of Arkansas Invitational. Camp, a Baylor junior, recorded a leap of 44 feet, 1.5 inches.

• Brian Ezeh, Blake Thompson and Jonathan Dixon, all Lee College grads, played extensively for Prairie View A&M in its 70-65 loss to Texas Southern University. Ezeh, who hit 6 of 8 from the field, finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Thompson tallied eight points and two rebounds, while Dixon added four rebounds.

• Baytown Sterling grad Shaye Montgomery scored 10 points in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s 61-54 win over McNeese State, hitting a pair of 3-pointers. The TAMUCC player also had a team-high nine assists and five rebounds.

• Mike White, an Indiana University player who prepped at Lee College, scored four points to help the Hoosiers put their third Big Ten notch on their belt. Indiana, currently ranked 10th in the most recent NCAA Division I poll, is 14-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten.

• Crosby grad Tia Jackson, a Tulane University sophomore, has 14 points and 10 rebounds in her eight games played. In addition to her 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, she also has two assists. Tulane is 11-5 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA.

Dugat is a freak of an athlete and is tearing it up at Baylor... He started this year off slow but has really gotten it together the past 10 or so games...right now he is one of the big reasons we are 2-0 to start conference, hope he keeps it up...

i'm glad to see baylor doing well... i've always kinda cheered for them because they were usually in the cellar.  it's good to see them performing well.
