Lady Cardinals look for 3-0 start to SLC play

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team heads to Huntsville, Texas on Saturday for 35th meeting between the Lady Cardinals and the Bearkats of Sam Houston state at 3 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.

The all time series between the two teams is tied 17-1, with Lamar winning each of the last three meetings between the two squads. The Lady Cards won 81-49 over Sam Houston State last year in Beaumont and posted a 51-46 win on February 16, 2006 in their last meeting in Huntsville.

The Lady Cardinals enter the game with a 9-6 overall record and a 2-0 record in Southland Conference play, on the heels of a 72-70 win over Stephen F. Austin on Thursday night at the Montagne Center.

Lamar is led in scoring by freshman Tamara Abalde, who is averaging team highs with 16.7 points per game along with 7.4 rebounds per game, while junior Nikki Williams is averaging 13.3 points per game and has a team-high 57 assists and 32 steals. Sophomore Brittney Williams is averaging 13.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game and senior Aida Bakhos is second on the team with 7.2 rebounds per game.

As a team the Lady Cardinals are shooting .393 from the field and are averaging 64.9 points per game while allowing 65.0 points per game. Lamar has controlled the boards this season, out rebounding their opponents 39.0 to 37.1.

Sam Houston enters the game with a 1-15 season record and a 0-3 mark in SLC play, narrowly dropping their last game 81-80 at Nicholls State.

The Bearkats are led by Whitney Smith's 13 points per game, while Lydia Gonzales is averaging 11.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Brittany Brooks has also been a strong offensive contributor for the Bearkats, scoring 10.3 points per game.   

As a team Sam Houston is averaging 56.8 points per game, while allowing their opponents 81.5 points per contest. They are shooting .337 from the field, while their opponents are connecting on .482 of their shots.

After Saturday's game the Lady Cardinals will return home for four straight games against Southland Conference East division foes. The home stand begins in Thursday night when they host Central Arkansas at 7 p.m.
