Lamar improves to 3-0 in SLC play

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Lamar University women's basketball team continued their solid start to Southland Conference play with a 70-47 win over the Sam Houston State Bearkats at Johnson Coliseum.

The Lady Cardinals improve to 10-6 overall and 3-0 in SLC play, while Sam Houston drops to 1-15 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

The Bearkats jumped out to a five point lead over the first minute of the game before the Lady Cardinals got the offense going. Once they found their groove on the offensive side of the floor Lamar used a 21-6 run over the next nine minutes to take control of the game at 21-11

Sam Houston made a run to cut Lamar's lead to five points with 8:49 to play, but that was as close as they would get. The Lady Cards closed out the half on a 20-10 run and went into halftime on a high note when Nikki Williams drained a buzzer beating three pointer.

Leading 41-26 heading into the second half, Lamar opened with a big run to burry the Bearkats in a 20-point hole. The Lady Cardinals grabbed their first 20-point lead at the 13:35 mark of the second half and the game never got closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

LU built their lead to as much as 25 points in the closing minutes of the game and finished with a 23 point win.

Lamar was led by Tamara Abalde who registered a double-double for the second straight game scoring a game-high 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while Brittney Williams had 15 points and six boards. Nikki Williams had another solid performance scoring 15 points and passing out seven assists while Trashanna Smith added nine points and eight boards.   

Sam Houston was led by Brittany Brooks who scored 12 points, while Britney Harris added 10 points. LaToya Bennett led the way for the Bearkats on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds.

As a team the Lady Cards out shot Sam Houston 39.4 percent to 38.8 percent while dominating the rebounding battle 48 to 30. Lamar also took advantage to of the free throw shooting battle making 14 of their 22 attempts while SHSU sank just five of 11.

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Thursday night when they play host to the University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears at 7 p.m. at the Montagne Center.

Hopefully, I'll make it out to see the Lady Cards on Thursday versus UCA. They are on a roll. BTW, the Coach Tidwell show is on KLVI tonight at 8:00.
