I always love that comment - level of competition.  I have seen plenty of 4a and 5a schools that could not play dead.  Thomas could play for anybody in the state and be the MVP hands down.  The back from Kirbyville played the likes of WOS, Jasper, etc.  HMMMM - level of competition.  I would take both of those kids over anybody from some 4a or 5a.

Good luck to all nominated - despite your level of competition

Bell had his hands involved in a team-leading 130 tackles. He collected 10 tackles for losses, caused four fumbles and recovered three more. In 21-3A play, Bell was a part of a defensive unit that allowed a mere 7.7 points a game as the Mustangs were able to extend their current 21-3A winning streak to 24 games.

From Vans story in Thursday's Orange Leader.

WO-S’ Garrett, Bell named Smith finalists

Van Wade

The Orange Leader

WEST ORANGE — It has been rare when over the years when West Orange-Stark doesn’t have a representative in the prestigious annual Willie Ray Smith, Sr. Awards banquet honoring the best offensive and best defensive football players in Southeast Texas.

Well, WO-S certainly made a statement this year as local media nominated running back DePauldrick Garrett as an offensive finalist and linebacker Cory Bell as a defensive finalist for the 16th annual event coming up in late February or early March.

“It’s terrific to have both those kids in the finals,†said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “We’ve been represented well in that event over the years and we’ve had kids win it a few times. To have two players from the same team involved in the same year is quite a deal and we’re honored to have those guys representing our program.â€

Garrett, the Orange Leader’s Offensive Player of the Year, became WO-S’ all-time leading rusher this season when he rushed for 1,394 yards and 25 touchdowns on 204 carries in helping lead the Mustangs (11-2) to their fourth straight District 21-3A crown and all the way to the Class 3A Division II Region III semifinals.

“DePauldrick, what a workhorse he has been,†said Hooks. “He’s so darn elusive and he made a lot of people miss the last couple years. He has also surprised with the way he runs with power. He was such a tremendous asset to the program and made himself a solid leader on and off the field.â€

Garrett wrapped us his days at WO-S with 3,251 yards and 52 touchdowns on 476 carries.

The other four finalists that will join Garrett include Lumberton running back Cody Hussey, who rushed for 1,783 yards and 19 touchdowns on 254 carries; Beaumont West Brook running back Christine Michael, who dashed for 1,171 yards and 24 TDs on 197 rushes; Kirbyville running back Pierce Rhodes, who had 1,922 yards and 27 TDs on 206 carries; and East Chambers’ quarterback Tramain Thomas, who had 2,215 total yards (1,352 rushing, 863 passing) and was involved in 35 touchdowns.

Bell, the Leader’s Player of the Year, had a tremendous senior campaign in just his first full season on the varsity after transferring from California during his junior year.

“I have to say that the California kid fit in perfectly for us,†Hooks said. “He busted his tail every day up here last summer and made himself an excellent football player. It just seemed like he got better each and every week. He’s such a quality kid. He may not have been in the program long but he’ll be considered a Mustang forever.â€

Joining Bell as defensive finalists include East Chambers’ Thomas, who posted 106 tackles and 11 interceptions; West Brook safety David Falgout, who posted 119 tackles and three interceptions; and Beaumont Kelly defensive end Kheeston Randall, who notched 78 tackles, 16 sacks and forced four fumbles.

The Smith Awards are in honor of legendary Southeast Texas coach Willie Ray Smith, Sr. (1911-1992).

Smith began his coaching career in 1942 at Dunbar High School in Lufkin. After coaching for four years, Smith came to Orange where he led Wallace High School up to 1957. In 1957, Smith began an 18-year coaching stint at Beaumont Charlton-Pollard High School.

Smith captured 235 games in his career, accomplishing amazing feats with stern discipline. He took over ill-equipped programs and turned each one of them into consistent winners.

Smith’s sons, Tody and Bubba, who both starred in the National Football League, are among more than 20 players he helped send on to pro football.
