Lady Cards look to improve to 5-0 in SLC play against NWST. Saturday @ 4pm

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team looks to improve to 5-0 in Southland Conference play, and remain perfect at home this season, when they take on the Lady Demons of Northwestern State on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Lady Cardinals 4-0 start to Southland Conference play is the best start in the history of the Lamar program, within the SLC. The best ever conference record was 12-0, accomplished by the 1990-91 team in the American South Conference.

The Lady Cardinals enter the game with an 11-6 overall record and a 4-0 record in Southland Conference play, on the heels of a 75-62 win over Central Arkansas on Thursday night at the Montagne Center.

Lamar is led in scoring by freshman Tamara Abalde, who is averaging team highs with 17.2 points per game along with 7.6 rebounds per game, while junior Nikki Williams is averaging 13.4 points per game and has a team-high 70 assists and 42 steals. Sophomore Brittney Williams is averaging 13.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game and senior Aida Bakhos is second on the team with 7.1 rebounds per game.

As a team the Lady Cardinals are shooting .395 from the field and are averaging 65.8 points per game while allowing 63.8 points per game. Lamar has controlled the boards this season, out rebounding their opponents 39.6 to 36.9.

Northwestern State enters the game with an 8-10 season record and a 1-4 mark in SLC play, on the heels of their first conference win, a 90-62 win over McNeese State on Thursday night.

The Lady Demons are led by Tena Matthews 13.8 points and 8.8 rebounds, while Ashli Barnum is averaging 9.1 points per game.

As a team Northwestern State is averaging 67.2 points per game, while allowing their opponents 65.6 points per contest. They are shooting .399 from the field, while their opponents are connecting on .401 of their shots.

After Saturday's game the Lady Cardinals will be off until Saturday afternoon when they host McNeese State at 4 p.m. at the Montagne Center in the opener of a women's-men's double header against their rival from Lake Charles, La.
