Bridge City’s Myers commits to Galveston College

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

BRIDGE CITY — Bridge City’s Audrey Myers is not finished playing volleyball just yet.

Myers, the MVP of the All-Orange Leader Volleyball Team, has committed to play volleyball at Galveston College after she graduates this summer from Bridge City High School.

Myers led the Lady Cardinals this season to a trip to the regional tournament as Bridge City also won a share of the District 21-3A championship along with Silsbee.

Now Myers will bring her talents to the Lady Whitecaps and Galveston Beach.

“It is a school that is close to home and I got a better offer,†Myers said on Tuesday. “My parents really did not want me to go off too far in my first year. I am excited about this and happy to be still playing in college.â€

Galveston Coach Jeff Pearce first saw Myers at tryouts for the team and then watched her play with a club team.

“She is just so athletic,†Pearce said. “I had not seen her until our tryouts and she blended real well with our kids. Then when she was with her club team, she was more comfortable with her own teammates and she performed well. She has a powerful arm and a great jump-serve. She is just a well-rounded athlete.â€

One person who is more than happy for Myers, who was also named MVP of the All-District 21-3A team, is second-year Bridge City Coach Becca Mathews.

“In my eyes, she is the best player in this area,†Mathews said. “For one her skills are unbelievable. Then she has a great attitude, work ethic and she is very court smart. If we had a couple more Audreys around, we would have been in the state tournament. Audrey, if she is not the best, she is one of the best players I have ever coached.â€

Myers is yet to sign with the Lady Whitecaps as the paperwork is yet to be finalized.

Myers’ season did not finish at the regional tournament in Huntsville as the Bridge City stand-out has been playing with the Jefferson County Juniors in tournaments.

The team this past weekend played in Houston and finished first in their pool and second overall in a tournament.

“Audrey does a little of everything,†Pearce said. “I have seen her set, hit and play in the back. You can really put her anywhere on the court. She is one of those players you see and know you need. We will be losing three sophomores and have a big freshman class coming in so we will be looking for a lot out of freshmen like Audrey.â€

Even though Myers tried out with Galveston College, Mathews knows the Lady Whitecaps’ coaching staff has not seen what all Myers is all about on the volleyball court.

“They have not seen her in game situations so I know they will be very shocked to see how good she really is,†Mathews said. “Any college that gets her is a lucky college. I’m really honored to have coached Audrey for the past two years.â€

One of the main reasons Myers is headed to Galveston College is the small size of the campus and where it is located.

“It is not a very big campus and it will be easier for me to get around,†Myers said. “I love being on the beach and that is just my kind of thing.â€
